Meblin, I remember you posting a preliminary design a few weeks ago for this idea. Looks great if you can manage it!

Anyway, as a side note, why do you think so many modders love Escher? Is it the fact that his pictures seem so technically 'correct' yet twisted? This guy had some mad skills! Very interesting.

I wonder if he ever made these things into sculptures...

*knows it's impossible and is joking. k?*

Well I know it is an imposibile thing to create in 3D but I have seen 3D versions created that give the correct illusion when viewed from the right angle.

(I did get the idea from that post about the Paving on Linears site)

    Gee, lemme guess...

A case covered in an Escher design (thank God the bottom panel is out of sight, I doubt you'd manage that!) along with a window with the same Escher design etched in and perfectly aligned to make it seamless?

Could be very nice... Are you keeping the case in that LOVELY beige though? I think this kinda thing would look nice with a macroblack style 'invisible' window.

Mmmmm, must create design which beats macroblack. MUST!

The picture is a little deceptive. It is actually silver and black. I thought about making the design flow over the top, but it will be almost impossible :D with the setup I have :(

You should have etched those gekko's on there like I did on my blue panel ;)

Nice work ... will be interesting to see the finished result ...

Thinking about it, wonder what it would look like black and silver rather than beige and silver :eyebrow:

Tis is what the other side panel will look like.

I will see if I can get the side and the top to match but not sure I can :(

But the again "Where there's a will there is a way!!!" :D

    Need more primer now

Even if you match the sides and the top perfectly, it ill look a little 'wrong' due to the right-angles messing up the effect. However, I guess the best match you'll get is by imagining the case as one long sheet of metal.

Do the top and sides come of as seperate panels? If so, just lie them side by side on the floor and continue the design as if there were no break in between. If you've got a U-shape cover though, good luck! (You'll need it!)

Can I make a li'l suggestion by the way? Since the fan is patially visible through the window, why not sand away the visible corner? This way it'll look nicer in your window, and the pane won't have a screw in it. Three screws are more than enough to hold the fan!

Oh, and if you can, get a CLEAR fan!!

    edit:
One more suggestion, does the window trim really need to be that thick? If you've got good filing skillz you can get away with using NO trim at all. Just a thought, since the designs would then match up flawlessly...

Thanks for the comments MrDT. I alsojust thought of treating the case as 1 piece of steal and all will be revealed when I write my full report. However, I already painted on panel so that sid will not match unless I repaint it (the lizards are the wrong way up :().

I cannot trim the fan as there is already a hole in the window and the window rubber is about that wide. The blow hole trim is a thinner than in the picture but you get the idea.

I need to go see a man about a dog before I do the etching part but, hopefully, it won't be as hard as it seems.

Sorry Meblin, I just followed your sig link, and have read the work in progress writeup. The case does look really good, maybe using a clear fan would help though?

Anyway, good work with the case :) As a side note, how much did your lcd setup cost, does it look ok as an external unit, and what exactly do you display on it?

I fancy making an external lcd unit just to show winamp playlists etc, but don't really know where to start. I hear good things about Matrix Orbital lcd units and the LCDC software though...

(Sorry everyone following this thread, I'm the off-topic meister! Tried using Private Message, but it's disabled WTF is up with that!?)

Well if I hadn't fried my first one it would have probably cost about £50-£60 all in but since I did fry my 1st LCD it coust over £100 :(

My LCD is indeed a Matrix Orbital and I us LCDC to conrol it. I display things like the temp of my PC memory usage etc... I would highly recomend it.

If you like using Winamp I have an infrared receiver package for sale if ya interested? :)

I really need to get a proper digi cam. Will have some better pics when my films have been developed.
