ABIT Computer Corporation, well-know for producing high-performance motherboards and VGAs for the enthusiast market, has announced new products in its well-rounded line of workstation boards: the WI-2P and WI-2Pa. These new workstation boards bring ABITs industry-renowned research and development expertise to the workstation market, offering extremely stable, high performance workstation solutions that represent far greater value in terms of price than computing solutions based on the same chipset.

The WI-2P and WI-2Pa are based on Intel's new dual processor workstation platform: Intel Xeon and Intel E7505 chipset. Featuring the latest Intel DP workstation technology, gigabit Ethernet LAN and Ultra320 SCSI storage interface, the WI-2P enables truly powerful workstations that can meet the most demanding workstation tasks. The WI-2Pa has the same features as the WI-2P except for the SCSI controller.

3D Labs, makers of workstation-quality graphic accelerators has announced that the ABIT WI-2P workstation platform has been tested and verified for use with Wildcat4 7110 and 7210 VGAs.The Wildcat4 7110 and 7210s are available only in an AGP-Pro50 interface, and are only to be used with workstations featuring the Intel 7205 and 7505 chipsets. 3Dlabs is the only PC graphics company solely focused on designing professional-grade accelerators. Wildcat4 continues this tradition through relentless driver reliability testing and constant optimization and certification of leading professional applications.

Designed around the new Intel NetBurst microarchitecture, the Intel Xeon processor with 512KB L2 cache allows multi-treading capability and up to 3.2GB per second system bus and memory throughput to ensure responsive access to applications and data. In addition, the Intel Xeon processor features 144 new instructions, which further empowers workstations in accelerating key media, signal processing, and arithmetic operations. Coupled now with the newly introduced Intel E7505 chipset, the Intel Xeon platform delivers optimum workstation performance with the support of AGP 8x graphics and over 1GB per second Hub Interconnect bandwidth.

ABIT WI-2P workstation board not only takes full advantage of the Intel DP workstation technological advancement and cost effectiveness but also provides appealing features like dual-channel Ultra 160 SCSI storage interface and gigabit Ethernet networking. With this advanced feature set, the WI-2P delivers massive computing power, abundant memory capacity and high I/O bandwidth that altogether enable powerful enterprise-class workstations. The ABIT WI-2P motherboard enables personal workstations to surpass the demands of more technical and professional applications, like 3D modeling/rendering, scientific study and engineering designs that are traditionally performed by
    Unix-based machines.

ABIT WI-2P motherboard is implemented to provide the full features of the Intel E7505 chipset. Key features include:
    • Support for Intel Xeon™ of 2.8GHz and faster CPUs with 512KB L2 cache
    • Tested and verified for use with 3D Labs Wildcat4 7110 and 7210 VGAs.
    • 6 DIMMs for 12GB PC2100 maximum memory capacity
    • 8x/4x AGP Pro slot
    • One gigabit Ethernet LAN
    • Dual channel Ultra 160 SCSI (optional Ultra 320)
    • 5 PCI/PCI-X expansion slots

Intel-based workstations, commonly defined as personal workstations, are increasingly replacing the so-called traditional workstations that are equipped with such chips as Sun UltraSPARC, Compaq Alpha and SGI MIPs chips that mainly run on the UNIX operating system. The driving forces behind this trend can be identified as the superior cost/performance ratio of the Intel platform and the prevailing support of the Microsoft Windows OS. With the introduction of the latest Intel E7505 chipset, the performance of personal workstations based on this new platform will attain even greater momentum thanks to higher computation power, much wider I/O bandwidth, and the support
of 8x AGP. With the release of the WI-2P and WI-2Pa, ABIT is poised to deliver the most powerful, cost-effective Intel E7505 workstation board available.
