Hey, my first post on these forums and im after abit of advice.

Im bulding my first pc allthough I have a fair bit of experience with upgrading and tinkering with prebuilt systems.

Here is the components that I have outlined.

    Proccessor

    Intel Core i7 930

    http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-320-IN&groupid=701&catid=6&subcat=1272

    Mother Board

    Asus P6X58D-E

    http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-399-AS&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=1692

    Cooler

Undecided as of yet, open to suggestions.

    Ram

    Corsair XMS3 3x2GB 1600MHZ

    http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-282-CS&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=1392

    Power Supply

Have not decided upon this yet. Reading the magazine im guessing that a "insert name here" is recommended. Havent got the magazine to hand and I cant rememeber the name haha.

    Case

    Coolermaster HAF X Gaming Case

    http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-203-CM

    Graphics

Im undecided between a gtx 470 or a gtx 480. Eventually im going to run two cards in SLi, thats why have chosen nvidia over Ati as im constantly being told that two nvidia cards will run better that two Ati's in crossfire.

Open to suggestion on this though.

    Hard Drive

Already got a 1tb "green" drive, Would like to go SSD for programs though and operating system, Will I see a major improvement in performance?

I think that rounds up the components, well I hope I haven't forgotten something :thumb: ,

Im looking to overclock the processor and want to achieve a stable 4ghz, Pc will be used for gaming, programming and the usual stuff for a student.

So I am basically just asking for your opinions on the components I have chosen and for any recommendation on any parts that aren't quite up to scratch and a replacement that you would recommend.

The parts you've already suggested seem great, but it would be much easier to help you make decisions if you gave us a budget for your system. It depends purely on your budget whether you go for the 470 or 480, or how big an SSD you get.

oh, sorry about that. That bit got chopped off of the thread, Was looking to spend around the £1200 - 1300 mark, could be abit tight on getting a SSD

You've missed out a pretty crucial piece of information which is the resolution you want to be gaming at. A single 480 GTX will deliver great framerated at high settings at even 1920x1200, two of them would be ludicrously overkill.

1920x1080 is what I will be playing at, and I must say that system youve specified looks tasty.

    Ill have a look now,

abit of a noobish question and something I should really know, but is there a huge improvment over a traditional hdd when runnign games of a SSD?

You won't see an increase in FPS but you'll get faster loadup & startup times.

I'd say this is a very good option to consider. It's the same price as the GTX 480 but offers roughly 20% better performance, lower temperatures & lower noise.

Support for SLI is very good at the moment so I don't see any real problem with going for this configuration. Make sure you get the 1GB versions.

I have no idea what to go for now as far as graphics go haha. Two 460's in Sli seems a good idea, but as I was more than likely going to add another 480 or 470 next year to the one I bought.

I cant help thinking it may be a better idea to hold out from getting two 460's in Sli and going for a 480 thinking ahead two when I will add another.

    decissions...

Personally, I think I'd get the 5870 if I was getting a single card. The high power, heat & noise seems like a high price to pay for the extra performanceof GTX 480, & it's more expensive. I'd probably only get the 480s if I was thinking of puuting them under watercooling. However that's just my opinion.

If you're not bothered by the heat & noise of the 480s then by all means go for them. However if it was me I'd either get the 5870 or wait for the next Nvidia/ATI refreshes.

Some thoughts. The H50 is a better cooler to get to 4GHz easily on. bit more expensive though. Some of the Titan coolers have had, shall we say, poor build quility.

The HAF cases are made for watercooling, I'm in the process of doing mine, so this is probably the direction you'll want to go in. So if you plan on doing this the 480 becomes mildly tempting, but the 5870 is much cheaper and delivers 90% of the frame rates. multi GPU is silly with current gen cards as they're only usable with super high res screens or multi monitor setups, in which case you'll want a 5xxx series for Eyefinity anyway.

Right time has come for me to buy the system, get payed at 12pm. Happy Days!

Here is the system that I think ive settled on.

I am in the future going to add a second gtx 480 and then watercool the system when the funds are in place, therefore Im asking if the powersupply ive chosen would be applicable? Im guessing im cutting it close with a 850w psu.

Secondly im very confused with the Ram, there seems to be so much choice. Can anyone explain the diffrence between the range of corsair XMS3? Is it timming?

And finally are these components all suitable? Any recomendations?

    Thanks Alex

*edit* Just noticed that a cooler is not listed. Corsair H50, or the Thermaltake Frio?

im leaning towards the Frio because of the review it recived in Custom Pc this month

    http://www.thermaltake.outervision.com/ (PSU calculator) enjoy :)

    Last minute jitters eh?

Go for 1600MHz RAM, as the stuff you've selected is on preorder so you'd have to wait for it to arrive, plus the extra speed wont be noticable. DVD-RW would help too :p

Lastly, are you going for a aftermarket cooler?

Is the corsair h50 suitable? cant get the Thermaltake FRIO anywhere plus id have to pay postage on top. So the h50 works out roughly at the same price.

Thanks for the help by the way :)

H-50 is very good. Get a good fan with it too, as it'll improve the cooling loads. When I upgraded to my Gentle Typhoons from Noctua fans my temps dropped 15C! Very quiet too, and I run 2 of the 1850RPM models!

just had a look on scan at the gentle typhoon fans, they only have the 1450rpm models available. Am i right in thinking that these would be mounted on the radiator to draw heat out of the coolant? or am I off the mark
