"The Inquirer has a story about ABIT's spiffy new IC7-MAX3 motherboard. Apparently, this motherboard has a feature called 'Secure IDE,' which is marketing-speak for hardware-based encryption ... ABIT goes on to claim that 'Secure IDE' 'will keep government supercomputers busy for weeks and will keep the RIAA away from your Kazaa files.' Pretty bold claims for a motherboard maker ..."

The RIAA bit seems to be the best.....

Do you think the RIAA will sue Abit or something for making a claim like that ?

So, they'll just make sure to get the name of everyone that purchases/owns these boards and start an immediate investigation on them.

The RIAA can scan your computer and monitor your file downloads, it just means if they seize the hard drive they'll have problems getting into it.

So they cant prove that you have any illegal files on your PC.

    That's good enough right ?

Cos they wont be able to do jack about it?

How long till this feature is on NF7 boards? :D

I think they'd have a hard time trying to get a subpoena for everyone who purchased a board with secureIDE... they'd have to prove that it was reasonable to assume that every single one of the people who bought the board are downloading their copyrighted material. I don't think they could do it.

    eh?

The logs of you downloading the actual files will be enough, and like they're gonna faf around saying they can't prove you have such files. they'll just sieze the adapter too. Infact, you'll probably be legally required to hand over all of your PC, and without that adapter, that aint compliance ;)

that's IF they catch you anyway, being 1 in 60 million others

Install some super strong electromagnets in your PC, connected through a few of those miltary style missile launch type switches.

As soon as RIAA is on to you and wanna confiscate your PC, flip the switch and give them some scrambled hard drives for lunch.

How can they prove that it was you downloading the files ? What kinda logs ?

How can they prove that a specific IP address is yours ?

What if someone was using an anonymizer (or similar thing) to mask IP addy? Then what ?

Can IP addresses be faked ? If it can then what if someone made the IP seem like yours ?

What if a hacker was using your computer to pass through the requests for files ? Wont it be your IP that turns up ?

Sorry if I seem a little bit thick, networking is not my forte.

There are a couple of guys here at work that have removed the crystal oscillator from an mb and connected a signal generator in its place.
Well they have totally killed a few hard drives by raising the frequency fed into the board from 14.318Mhz to somewhere around 19+Mhz.
One of those boards and a function generator would make it real hard to get at anything on that unlucky drive.

snitz is on to something I think. You can spoof your IP can't you? Make it look like someone else on the ISPs network is downloading/uploading...

I've always been a fan of the idea that it's the RIAA who comes busting in your door, not the police... In Texas you can shoot someone who breaks into your home... I recommend they ring the doorbell first... or bring police... I have a feeling that would work better than a magnet

Seems like a bit of a gimmick.

I'm really not bothered if the RIAA or anyone finds I've got copyrighted files on my computer. I mean, I can just say I didn't download them, they can't really proove I did. Lots of my friends come in and out of my house, it could have been any of them. Someone could have remotely accessed my computer without my permission and downloaded stuff. Have the RIAA actually caught many people by scanning their computers. Are they even legally allowed to scan peoples computers? Computer Misuse Act?

Except, sid, that aparently they're not getting people for downloading the music. They're getting it for sharing it. Which is a load of bull****, IMO. If I had another box lying around I would set it up, put a crapload of music on it, then open it up... completely. So anyone could easily see anything on it. Say it was so I could get files I needed for school/work... I wasn't aware anyone else could get into it </ignorance> :naughty:

So if they arent catching you for posession of copyrighted stuff, and you dont share on kazaa they wont do anything to you ?

I think they will charge for posession as well. In which case, its your PC, so you posess copyrighted illegal material.

I think this is part of the cunning plan that will culminate with hot swapping with SATA 2. Have two HDDs, one very very clean. As soon as the RIAA come knocking swap them over while the PC is still running and hide the other drive :)
