Thank you, penski. I have had a beard for the last 5 years and have to beat the wife off with a stick.

On a practical note, only the nice expensive electric razors are worth using. The others are used to pry information out of POWs. The Mach3 was a god send, although the blades are a bit steep. I only shave my neck and cheeks these days, and so dont used shaving cream anymore. When I was hairless, I just used the gillet gel. Make sure to shave after a nice hot shower, it opens the pores and softens the hairs. Make sure to pat dry and not rub! If you really want to pamper yourself, find and old school italian barber and have a shave and a haircut. The ulimate man spa. I have a 60yo Iranian guy I go to twice a month. He washes my hair, cuts it, lathers and shaves me with a straight razor, trims my eyebrows and nose hairs, checks to see if I'm balding and gives me unprompted sex advice. The greatest 2 hours of alone time.

2nd Edit/My wife wanted me to mention that if you do grow a beard, keep it trimmed and neat. Looking like a plane wreck surviour is not sexy, showing you know how to groom yourself is sexy. Her words-not mine.

King of Shaves shaving oil mixed with the gel is a dream.. Lubes up your skin very nicely, the razor glides along it far better than with Gillette gel and it leaves the skin soft and moist. No need for balm/moisture cream.

You can get a free sample from www.kingofshaves.com.

    ^Sounds like a proper pimp, but s'not.

not a fan of shaving. for a while i stopped, but the girlfriend prefers it when i shave, and it's totally worth it. right now i use an old gillette sensor excel, been using it since i was 12. looking to pick up something new, doesnt seem to work as well as it used to, most likely due to the hair being thicker. i'm probably going to pick up a mach3. i've tried a couple shaving gels, found that the king of shaves menthol one, while it burns a bit because it's menthol, works fairly well.

nothing beats a sink of hot water, a decent razor and a nice foam/gel for a shave.

my advice is to go into the pharmasist and get the most expensive razor (none electric) you can find and some nice soothing gel and go from there.

i have to shave everyother day otherwise i look like a right scruffy git :S

and i go through 4 blades for my mach 3 every month or so.

    but its still worth it.

must buy a cut throat and try that ;)

I don't like gel at all, tried it before and was not impressed, foam works better for me, best applied with one of those old men brushes lol

ToM - I've been meaning to buy one of those old style razors for ages now but I have never seen any, where does one get them?

Not so, you can buy brand, spankin' new ones here:

    http://www.mr-brooks.co.uk/cgi-bin/index.cgi?brand=Miraki

Stainless! Nice. with 20 blades too.

Also, for those who have more traditional tastes in shaving:

Just a word of advice: If you're doing some "personal shaving", I'd probably go for a gilette rather than this 4 inch razorblade. Noboy wants to sneeze, look down and see it washing down the plughole.... ;)

I shave with a sharp wet razor when im in the shower. All that steam + hot water loosens the pores up a treat for a nice smooth shave :p Then when I get out I splash my face with icy cold water to close the pores back up. Works a treat. I practically stopped getting spots doing it this way and its so easy on the skin.

I allways get the Gillette Mach3's and the Gillette shaving cream. Hot shower then dont really dry the face. Instead of using warm water to shave I use icy cold water.

    Perfect!

Assuming you're putting enough effort into face cleansing spots should be small enough for the razor to glide over. You'd be surprised...

Mach3 and gillette gel for me. I should use a proper after-shave product but i tend to go straight to my clearasil moisturiser, and that's only when i'm not being lazy..

Please don't try to grow a beard until you can pull it off - bum-fluff upper lip and jaw-line will NOT make you look 'hard/older/attractive'. Think more 'compensating/underage/no-concept-of-personal-hygiene'

    edit:
    'cut-throat' = CUT + THROAT o.0

I would never use an electric razor or shaving gel ever again, about two years ago I tried a shaving soap bowl and brush thingy and i can hand on my heart say i have not cut myself since, normal shaving gel used to leave me sore and red but the soap leave's nothing behind, well worth a try for what it costs :thumb:

yeah man, you can shave without lotion or gel, but it leaves a nasty little thing called RAZOR BURN. it hurts like hell and your skin will be red for awhile. i've only "dry shaved" once and i'll never do it again. i had a marine corp inspection that day and had to shave minutes before the inspection with a borrowed razor because mine was nowhere to be found.

on another note....Tom, try using a bowl of cold water, you'll find it makes the blades more solid and cuts the hair cleaner.

Hmmm, i have a Mach 3 from Gilette, and i only cut myself usually when shaving drunk! :) It does the job much better than my electric shaver did! and the blade has lasted a few months now!

Meh I shave whenever I feel the need not to look trampy. Beards rock (it's a shame my mum says I look like a terrorist when I grow one :-(). Normally I just use a beard trimmer and then proper razor about once every 2-3 weeks.

I've never had the "talk" with my dad. Never felt the need to.
