So I just picked up some automotive engine paint, low gloss black. I'm looking to paint the entire interior of my new case, the Zalman GS1000.

I'm thinking of disassembling the entire case and take off all the plastic/aluminum exterior leaving just the steel shell inside.

Is this a bad idea? It looks like there's also alot of cables routed throughout between the steel and the outer frame.

I just want it to be even and cover everything, so my nice interior on display doesn't have parts towards the back I might miss or something. What would you do?

that'd be interesting.. yeah the cables around the back might show, unless you stick it up against a wall or something

I'm gonna be sleeving the entire system in a professional sleeving kit but what I'm worried about is taking the exterior apart from the steel, idk if this is done commonly but I'm afraid I'm gonna take things apart I'm not supposed to and not be able to put it back together

My thoughts on it... The case had to be assembled from individual pieces at one point, it shouldn't hurt anything to put it back to that point.

I'm interested to see the results. ;)

As long as you're not seeing rivets, you should be fine.

If I did it, I'd drill out all the rivets, lightly sand the panels, hang them on wire and paint them that way, then rivet it back together

it's the hardest way to do it but it will give you the best results. Plus if you try to paint the case as a whole you're going to miss spots or get runs trying to get into small/tight corners

lol that is a good idea but too late now, first coat went on last night (too hot out to paint during day here) but it did go on pretty well.

I'll be putting on second coat when the temp drops a bit and post pics here once I'm done :)
