So I found out I got my account hacked on Steam the other day.

I installed Steam, and haven't used it for a year or so. I then found out it wouldn't take my login details, or send me a reset question when I went through the process.

So I e-mailed Steam, and gave banking details as proof, then regained access.

My details had all been set to some Croatian guy with the tag "Perfektor".

    Little goit.

I found out, he has used hacks on my account, and I am VAC banned! So I contact Steam, and they say that they wont undo the ban as it was done legitametly, even though my account was hacked!

Now I know my system is clean from spyware, and I am careful with my passwords and they are 'strong' passwords.

Either way I have paid good money for these games and now I can only go on sodding plenty o'hacks servers!

Has anyone else experienced this? Has anyone been unbanned?

I have asked for an appeal, but they keep telling me to sling it.

    Grrrrr.

If your steam account got hacked, then surely you had malware on your system.

Yet another reason why I just hate the whole freaking steam. I want to buy a game DVD, I want to install a game, and I want to play a game. I don't want to buy permission to download a game, wait for the DL, have all my eggs in one basket and then have some asshat steal my account.

Sorry, it's a lil bit too late now and some times Steam sure has tempting offers, but that really blows.

Should have been more careful with spyware.

At least you got your games back though. AFAIK their policy is to never lift a VAC ban. But you can still play on non-VAC servers.

    I understand you're p155ed off.

But ultimately you're responsible for the security of your account and passwords.

It could well have been your email that got hacked. They guy found a message from steam and asked for a user reset.

But if they removed VAC bans people would constantly claim to have had their account hacked.

It's the same with house insurance, if you left your door open the insurance might not pay out.

I've had disks fail, I've had keys go missing, you get limited activations, you get some games thrashing your DVD drive while you play, you get awful anti copy software installed by stealth.

Steam is not perfect, but it does do some things very well.
personally, if a games the same price for a hard copy and a steam copy, I go for the steam one.

This would be a disaster if it happened to me, I have over 50 games on Steam ATM :worried:

If they know that you're account was hacked, I don't see the problem with the assumption it was the hacker who got you banned? Baffling...

I think part of the problem will be; they don't know when the account was hacked, therefore there is no proof that the VAC bans are the hackers and not the OPs. If they do it for one, they have to do the same for all the people who 'have been hacked'.

I had this and they were right sods abiout it, i then decided to seek legal advice as i had around £900 worth of games if not more (from the uncle who happens to be a solicitor) and steam removed the VAC as according to my solicitors letter I went "above and beyond the duties of the average customer doing his upmost to resolve an uncontrolled event that he had no involvement in." It then went on to mention certain services had been paid for that now were not accessable and even though there are guide lines for preventional measures to be implimented to avoid such issues, these measures are still not 100% water tight and as such I should not be penalised because of them.

I think Steam just gave in as ultimately it would cost them more in man hours and resources etc than it was actually worth.

For a week or two I was exceptionally miffed and found myself only able to compete in servers full of noobs and trigger happy 'tards!

Never have liked steam as its so easy to lose everything that you have aquired over the years. Buying media that doesnt require steam is a must in my opinion and new games bought from shops (cod6) that require steam i think are left wide open to hackers, something I feel we as the "customer" shouldnt have to be forced in to.

I know that I don't have spyware on my system. I schedule a scan every week, and am a careful PC user.

    I have said this.

You would think that they could take a look at their records for the IP when the ban was put in place. Then show that it was from Croatia.

Andy, you don't happen to have a copy of that letter do you? It would be a great help if I could modify it a bit and see what they say?

I have sent about 6 e-mails, and I understand they can't just go unbanning people, as people will make excuses. But they won't even answer my questions about an appeal process, and now my games are signed to that account so I can't use them on another.

I just wish they would treat me fairly, instead of just labeling me a hacker, and not looking to even give me a tiny bit of consideration. What happened to the customer is always right?

Make a new account, you'll have to buy the MP games you want again, and buy all your new games for the new account?

Scary stuff. I reckon sending them legal warning will do the trick, like andrew8200m says they don't have the time or the money to fight you back (and sending solicitor's letters is a waste of time for hackers).

I reckon your e-mail was the one compromised; hackers probably have a list of e-mail-linked-things-that-are-worth-money to check whenever they gain access to an e-mail account - think e-banking, PayPal, Steam, iTunes etc. They just go to the site, enter your e-mail, and ask for a new password. In fact, if you have any of those, I'd go through them with a fine-toothed comb and change your passwords just in case...

To be fair, I signed up with a hotmail account about 8 years ago. I use gmail now, and change my password every few months.

Luckily all my financial stuff is on my gmail account.

Yea, I think I might try and get a hold of something legal looking. If anyone has a draft document or something similar I can adapt I would appreciate it, as I don't have a clue where to look!

I have such a hatred for people who do something for personal gain at the expense of a fellow working man.

It's one thing to craftily rip-off a company, but a regular joe! Not cool!

I would do some unsavoury things to the chap in Croatia if I ever met him!
