Two thoughts: 1, the more we learn about ourselves, the more compley we realize we are. The debate for hears has been nature vs nurture. Now we're learning that the two factors can influence eachother. 2. There has to be a lesson in the last sentance about why the stupid will eventually take over the world. It's well documented that the more comfortable someone becomes in their living situation, the fewer kids they have. In most western societies ambition, intelligence, and willingness to work have replaced random chance as predictors of success , but unfortunatly we seem to be selecting against those who achieve.
1. This is not news, I'm afraid. Depression and PTSD alter brain structures, famines genetically predispose subsequent generations to diabetes (and, apparently, schizophrenia). Moreover this study confounds its measurements (good design is everything): So are we measuring the impact of abuse or of severe depression? Long-term depression, as we know, does result in biochemical changes that are neurotoxic particularly to brain cells in the hippocampus. 2. The stupid and poor procreate more, but do not live as long. And they have much less control in society. The smart and well-off live longer and have more power. It all balances out in favour of the smart and well-off.
