hi, i just installed gentoo on my laptop, it has an ati graphics card so emerged (is that the right word) ati-drivers (which is the fglrx driver) but i get this ACCESS VIOLATION SUMMARY
    LOG FILE = "/var/log/sandbox/sandbox-x11-drivers_-_ati-drivers-8.471.3-19678.log"

it then repets open_wr: /usr/src/linux-2.6.24-gentoo-r8/null.gcda (which is also the contents of the .log file) im a little unsure what im ment to do now

i also tried emerging links but get this
    !!! ERROR: media-libs/tiff-3.8.2-r3 failed
    call stack
    ebuild.sh, line 1614 called dyn_compile
    ebuild.sh, line 971 called qa_call 'src_compile'
    enviroment, line 3471 called src_compile
    tiff-3.8.2-r3.ebuild, line 42 called die

    !!! emake failed
!!! a complete build log is located at /var/tmp/portage/media-libs/tiff-3.8.2-r3/temp/build.log

edit: just went to recompile the kernel to add support for my wireless nic and discovered that there is clock skew, which google has told me means that something todo with make happened at a future date, the date command returns a time that is about a minute different then my watch, strange that the handbook metioned enter the date command a couple of times which was fine then (differnce about the same as now) is this releated to those problems or just another one?

Try removing the temporary files in /var/tmp/portage and the source tarball in /usr/portage/distfiles.

    Then reemerge.

im guessing that would be for links, (who would have thought a browser on a machine with the error message could be useful) i think i may have found a soulution to the ati driver on the gentoo fourms ill give both a shot soonish

    edit
got the same problem after your suggestion, and the other thing i tried involved emerge -aND world to which portage<version> is blocking bash<version> i tried locking bash to a max version below that but that didnt work

    edit2
so got around the sandbox violation there was two options FEATURES="-sandbox" emerge ati-drivers or updating sandbox which worked, but X is not playing ball at all, could someone possible give me a working xorg.conf to modify?

Look at the Gentoo Bugzilla for your problem, if it’s not there file a bug yourself. xorgconfig should help you get a working xorg.conf. Post the contents of Xorg.0.log here and I’ll take a look.

Basically, you have no mouse or keyboard drivers. You need to install x11-drivers/xf86-input-mouse and x11-drivers/xf86-input-keyboard

okay ill give that a go soon, im pretty sure i emerged the synatpic driver thou
edit: chears im now looking at the ugly TWM even have dual monitor (res needs fixing thou) , whatevers stopping links to compile is also affecting fluxbox :(

edit: if a masked package is unmasked, how would one go about remasking it i tried deleting from package.unmask and adding to package.mask but neither worked

To use the synaptics driver you have to specify synaptics in xorg.conf. Take a look at http://gentoo-wiki.com/HARDWARE_Synaptics_Touchpad

I don’t use emerge, but I’m pretty sure removing from package.unmask should do it, you sure it’s not keyworded instead? Looks for ACCEPT_KEYWORDS in make.conf

Remove it from package.unmask and reupdate the system (emerge -avuDNt world)

cheers glider that appears to have fixed the problem (once i hardmasked bash it was being blocked by portage with a solution i come up with for a different problem which turned out to make more problems and didnt solve the orginal

    @fophillips
when you say you dont use emerge are you saying that you use that plaudis(?) that ive heard about? emerge deffinatly appears to be considerably better then apt and what ive seen of yum

i think ive solved the compiler problems and believe i need a good slapping about it, slight typo in make.conf "CXXFLAGS={CHOST}" instead of "CXXFLAGS=${CHOST}, and if i recall $is variable or use this varible

But flawed in some others... It has potential, but I'm going to stick with the 'standard' stuff :D

mostly up and running, i just cant connect to the proxy server (using links) and im going around in circles trying to get info on proxies (not the server part theres a lot of stuff on that), but is there a package that will log me into the proxy and allow all my net-apps to run webbrowser, irc, amsn and email being the main ones, portage would be nice as well
