So I was doing at home tech support for a family and I noticed something particularly odd about the setup they had. 1. The computer cannot make a network connection, an invalid IP or whatnot always comes up despite using different PCI and USB NIC devices. So it's not the NICs... 2. My own computer works perfect on their setup. So it's not their Cable modem... I also used the same cable when I used my computer, so it's not that. 3. I changed modems. Still the same issue. Any ideas?
do not use recover, as i did that once and i could not install gfx drivers coz it never saw me GF2, may b an isolated incedent but u never kno
They were having this problem before, then I'd reformatted and installed XP and it happened again. The only thing I can still think off is a whacked mobo or something.
Did you try to release and renew the ip address through the ipconfig command? Can you ping the modem with their pc?
No, good idea. I'll try that when I go back soon enough. What should I be looking for and what should I do when and if I get a ping and all that?
Well I was just guessing, but thats usually the first thing I do when I loose my connection is ping my modem\router! Just open command and type [ping^"default gateway"] you can also try to ping^127.0.0.1 that should tell you if the nics are working for sure. But it does not sound like a hardware problem to me.
