After deteriorating performance of the PC, I ran "PC Doctor" diagnostics program and came to know that half of the Windows Services are inactive, due to which I'm unable to update OS (Win XP Pro), or login into several websites, among other problems. Because it's too lengthy, the list is not furnished here, but can do so if you want to know what are the services that are inactive.

Now, from the above info, can you please suggest how I can activate these services? When I tried to start by clicking on Start button of the "Start > Settings > Control Panel > Admin Tools > Services", I'm getting one of the error Nos; 1063, 1067, 1068, or 1083. I feel one of the programs was turned off by a virus attack recently, and turning it on would solve all the problems. But the question is which one was turned off?

Any help would be highly appreciated.

    Thank you

    Win XP "Inactive Services"

Yes, but the problem is either I've to lose my data, which is accumulated over the years, or transfer it into another computer, and then reformat. The supplier, IBM, instead of giving the CD for the OS, has loaded it into a highly secured corner of the harddisk. It cannot be used for repairing the OS, but one can only reinstall it.

Actually, my problem is not complicated. One has to know how to turn on the services that have become inactive. There must be a switch somewhere in the form of a check box :miffed: :miffed: or something which could solve all the problems.

This is an easy one :hehe:

    Start>Run>msconfig

Then just click the services tab and activate the ones which you want  .

    Cheers

Thanks for the cheers, but it was no go. In fact all the services were checked in the run > msconfig > services tab, but some were stated to be cancelled. I don't know who cancelled :worried:

However, I'm now more inclined to believe that the problem has to do with Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Locator. But when I try to start it from the Services in Start > Control Panel > Admin Tools > Services, I get the error message - "Could not start the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Locator service on Local Computer.

Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start."

    Any ideas, please?

That error sounds like a service that checks dependencies isn't started. Can you tell if the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) service is running? That's a biggie for sure. A lot of other services depend on that one. If it's not running, check out www.blackviper.com , he has a page there that describes how to get Remote Procedure Call (RPC) back up and running. It lists it for Windows2000, but I imagine XP should be the same.

Can you get to services by going to Start->Run->Services.msc? I figure that is probably the same as going through control panel, but just thought it might be worth a shot. You can also try to start a service from a command line by typing:

NET START "Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Locator"

Exactly like that with the quotes and everything. Hope some of this helps. :)

    We're close to solution

I tried the Start > Run > Services.msc, and it's working, but when I tried to start some of the services, I'm still getting only error messages. It's the same with command prompt, where I got the error message: "System error 1068 has occured. The dependency service or group failed to start."

Now, please don't get :miffed: with me, for I've something to confess. The link you provided reminds me that it was at the "blackviper" - page (I vaguely remember) that it was suggested to disable RPC Locator. Since this happened at the same time as the virus attack, my whole attention was diverted on to a wrong track. Any how, I'm not sure of this assumption either, but shall let you know withing couple of hours. Why the delay? Because it's dinner time at home and everyone is waiting for me.

Shall get back to you in a jiffy.

    Blackviper link not working

Something wrong with blackviper site, I think. Any number of times I tried but only to end up at Google's search page. I tried the methods suggested by Google, but all to no avail. Any ideas? Other sites who could throw some ight on Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Locator? I know, you could be annoyed with my fiddling with such an important service, but then, Adam too yielded when tempted by the black viper!

:worried: pretty sure your in the late stages of one of the blaster virus's

i have tried to all manner of ways to get the services back but no luck, if i was you get a spare harddrive and copy the files over if you cant do it in windows boot up into dos (if you have some boot disks) then format re-install as you cant repair. or spend £90 on a new copy of xp

or get a dodgy one at your own risk as illegal etc... yadda yadda :worried:

    Starting life afresh

Much indebted to your advice :waah: . I'm just back, beaten and bruised :wallbash: , but successfully reformatting and reloading the OS. Blast the blaster worm! Who invented it any way? :miffed:

    Bye for now.
