Back in Feburary, we reported that we were set for a double DOOMing in early April. Today is the day of reckoning, and the long-awaited release of Doom 3 for the Xbox platform, while we also see the introduction of Doom 3's expansion pack - Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil. Many gamers felt that Doom 3 to fall short of expectations, but it was still heralded as the fastest selling PC action game of all time.

The expansion pack sees the return of the double barrelled shotgun, as well as the "grabber gun" that we reported back in Feburary. There is also the improved multiplayer experience, along with the introduction of the new capture-the-flag mode developed by ThreeWave Software, who were the designers of the original CTF mode for the first installment of the Quake series.

Doom 3 for the Xbox was co-developed by id Software and Vicarious Visions, is also available as an exclusive Limited Collector's Edition. The special edition includes full versions of the original Ultimate Doom and Doom II. The title is playable in single player or 2-4 player split-screen modes, and the collector's edition includes a special concept art gallery and "Behind the Scenes" feature on the making of Doom 3, containing interviews with the team at id Software.

Todd Hollenshead, CEO of id Software, had a few choice words to say about the introduction of the two new titles in the Doom series:

"Prepare to travel to the undiscovered depths of Hell in these two new chapters in the Doom 3 experience." He later went on to say that "Xbox gamers have been anxiously awaiting their chance to experience the terror of Doom 3 and now the wait is over. For PC fans, Resurrection of Evil delivers tougher demons, faster action, new weapons, and the same unrelenting terror that has shocked millions of players worldwide."
Early reports suggest that Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil is a more complete title than Doom 3 was, thanks to the new weapons and a more polished game play experience. The grabber gun is reported to be easier to use than Half-Life 2's gravity gun, and you are able to grab heads, energy balls and pretty much anything that isn't nailed down or too large to pick up.

We expect the UK release to follow this Friday.

    The dilemma -

To finish playing through Doom3 original, which I have got renewed interest in since receiving a 6800GT.

    or

To install and play RoE expansion, which by many accounts is, as said above, a more complete game.

Time is of the essence, with so many other class titles out right now. It truly is a great time to be a gamer

Well, I may give it a try. But last time I tried to play doom3 it hardlocked on me. Maybe it doesn't like cranking up the eye candy to the max in order to try and cover the crappy textures in many places and horrible gameplay.
