I have a laptop (Samsung X360) that requires 19 V through the AC adapter entry.

I want to add an external self-made battery through this entry.

Since I will not be able to match the 19 V exactly, by how much lower/higher may the voltage deviate from the required 19 V ?

Is it better to have 1V less than 1V too much ?

Is it safe to experiment a little ? lower voltage , less risky than higher ?

Is there a safety protection built in the laptop ? Only a fuse will blow up without more damage to the rest of the laptop ?

Lower is always safer than higher. (Although ±1V doesn't really make a difference.)

    What about +2V or -2V ?

Propably should work just fine. But avoid if possible.

What would be a safe way to test the limits up and down ?

A better question is why can't you match the 19v?
If you can do +1/2v, why not slap a buck converter or something on it?

    Cells are 3.3 Volt

I prefer not to use a converter because of losses.

What losses do the best converters have ? Any link to those ?

    Assume I use 5 cells * 3.3 = 16.5
    6 cells * 3.3 = 19.8

What converters can convert the above voltages to 19 V ?

You'd have to use an extra cell, then use a DC/DC buck converter.

TBH though, 19.8v will probably be fine. If you're really worried, what's the current draw going to be like; you might be able to use a beefy zener diode.
