I currently have 4GB of RAM (see sig) and was considering upgrading to 8GB since it is so cheap and I am starting to use 3ds max. I was hoping to just add 2 more 2GB sticks of the same RAM, but it is no longer available in shops. So... Which things do I need to match so the RAM is compatible? I assume I need to match speed, size, timings and voltage? What about brand? Thanks
In my opinion, I would sell your current RAM on for say £15-£20 and buy a matched 8GB pair or 16GB set, just for ease of mind without having to worry about incompatibility issues and whatnot.
Assuming you get a 2x2gb 1600mhz cl8 kit of ram from the same company its likely going to work. Easist way is as suggested above and with ram prices like they are id probably just dump the 4gb in a spare machine.
From your signature it sounds like you have this RAM kit http://www.crucial.com/uk/store/partspecs.aspx?IMODULE=BLT2CP2G3D1608DT1TX0CEU If so, you can still get it direct from Crucial.
They have to be the same voltage, speed and size. But even then you could have problems. I've heard people that bought the same set and had problems because the manufacturer updated the ram.
Definitely the way forward for compatibility and future upgrade-ability. I just sold 4x2GB XMS3 on (fl)eBay for more than 2x4GB Ballistix, happy days!
Yes - stick it on the 'bay and buy some new RAM - guaranteed fresh memory and compatibility! Plus - let's face it, it's always nice to get parcels to open...
