Ok, first off. My dad's office computer (home office) is dying on him. Or at least the HDD is. Its a DELL comp so that one problem right away:eyebrow::sigh: He's buying a WD60 GB right now and ive got a few questions. All I gotta do is plug this into the comp as the second HDD. take the IDE from the one the original is plugged into and use that (2 device IDE ribbon) then connect power on boot up the comp. Windows will recognize the new drive right away wont it? The I'll ghost the old drive onto the new one and reformat the old one and use it as storage for less important files. Just My computer> right click C:> tools> format right? Oh yeah and hes got windows ME !!!!!! big mistake right there too but all in all, this would work right?

Theres nothing wrong with dell...they make the worlds most high tech doorstop :D I haven't used ghost in a while, so correct me if im wrong..plug in the 2nd HD (set as slave) and boot from a dos disk (dont go into winME yet)...ghost the drive, remove crappy old one..switch the new to master...and there ya go. Boot into ME and be happy...then 2 weeks later upgrade to XP :)

when Scope says "upgrade to XP" I hope he means replacing ME with XP. My sister had a nightmare situation when she upgraded her system from ME to XP... I have always disliked M$'s upgrade processes. If I jumped from one OS to another, I go with full install/replacement to save you from headaches in the future... just my $.02 :D

Although I have heard of problems with this procedure, when I performed it I didn't encounter any! Maybe I was just lucky, but it remains an option. Don't forget that you can actually do a fresh install of Win XP if you need to with the upgrade pack!

that I didn't know... I have gone way back with windows and never liked the situation that if I had to do a reinstall with upgrade disks... especially the various 95 generation upgrades... total crap and made it a practice not to use ever since... perhaps I have been too harsh and have seen the error of my ways...

not to change the thread too much...

None issue for me... smaller systems for kids, I have 98SE and on my system I just built, 2Kpro... don't plan on that changing anytime soon. I like to keep things very simple. I keep everything hardware-wise on one CD, not unlike me to just flush a system and do a total reload. I have taught my kids "there better not be anything on there you can't live without..." they have done pretty good with that.. I have made it a habit.

for the most clean best runnin system, just install win2k or xp (win2k would be my preference) and then get the pc up and runnin....once this is done hook up the secondary hdd and copy all the information across...

you could probably do it with a windows programme. You can get one called norton disk image.
