i have been having some trouble with my pc lately varying from freezing up when using OPERA to view this site to restarting on its own and now only recognising 2GB of the 3GB installed

    i am using a
    gigabyte GA-MA770-UD3 motherboard
    AMD PHENOM II X4 940 oc'd to 3.5GHZ
    2GB OCZ PLATINUM PC2-6400 1 GB GEIL PC2-6400
    PALIT 1GB 250GS gpu
    MAXTOR 320GB HDD
    HIPER 580W PSU
    DVD RW

the problems all started after i downloaded latest updates for mcafee 2010 internet security and my o2 usb broadband dongle lost connection and i had to restart its software. All advice and help gratefully recieved as i cant afford to get a new motherboard or any other components til end of september at the earliest .

LOL. This is one of those dangerous threads to get involved in.

What OS are you on? Have you tried using system restore to roll your drivers etc back?

Also check windows update. I know there was an update with a forced re-start recently on Win7 at least ... it might be that something has updated that your system doesn't like.

    Try removing your overclock.
Hiper PSU's are known for being flakey (hence why they went bust) and with a big OC on a Phenom it might be providing too little voltage on the main rails.

I forgot about the OS its xp pro sp3 everything has been running fine until recently the memory was nor problem as both ddr2 800mhz and worked fine when i had 4GB in system i used 1GB to get an old amd 5200 x2 system up and running before sending off to a homeless shelter i used when i had some trouble in london 5 years ago .As for the psu it has been going strong since i got it 2 years ago from a friend who ordered it for a new build then decided not to bother going ahead with it apparently it had sat round in his house for 2 years cluttering up the place and was still in its original sealed box.

The fact is that something has gone wrong, you need to at least try removing your OC, borrowing someone else's PSU to check if that is the issue and taking out the Geil. At most it will take an hour of your time. How else are you going to diagnose this?

Doesn't matter if it was new or not. They are rubbish. I had one & it started dropping voltages then exploded. I couldn't replace it even though it was still in the hiper warranty as they went bust.

seem to be missing the point here.

does the PC ONLY FREEZE when using opera if so dump it and use IE firefox or chrome.

if the PC freezes when using other software then we got different problems.

When does the PC recognise 2GB instead of 3GB is this random or is it now stuck using 2GB if its the latter need to run MEM test could be a faulty stick.

and your third problem seems to be a conflict with your AV and o2 dongle software. can you change AV ? macafee is rubbish anyway. try AVG or Avast free to see if the issue goes away.
