This is the final spec that Ive come up with for a gaming/photoshop/general use PC. http://www.scan.co.uk/savedbasket/cf793416f47444f78c98b65bb935ff56 Ive upped my budget slightly to include a couple of things. Have I made any major errors? Any changes/advice is always welcome, Im still a n00b after all! Thanks
Unless you already have one, you've missed out on a power supply. Other than that i don't see anything i wouldn't have (well apart from case and keyboard/mouse but thats down to personal preference. Nothing wrong with what you've picked). Other people may pick up on something though, they're more knowledgeable than i
Looks good Only thing I would say is 1. £20 more for 2TB hdd 2. Afew 120mm fans, cathode, etc - really complete a build depending on person tho 3. Read up reviews on wireless USB thingy. I used one once and had to buy a larger antenna due to wall thickness. Ended up moving to a house that was wired with cat6 cables. Gaming Is better on a wired network. If that's a no go then get the best reviewed wireless card/USB you can afford.
I suggest a better wireless card. You always get what you paid for. And usually USB type wireless card aren't great... especially for this price. The rest looks good. It just sadness me to see a poor keyboard and mouse and terrible monitor used on a new computer. I really hope that it's because you are limited by your budget. Also, you are missing Windows license. If you are a student, check if your college or University is part of MSDNAA. If so, you have a nice license of Windows 7 32 and 64-bit waiting for you, ready to be installed (as well as all Microsoft software except MS Office (OneNote and Project is included though))
I already have windows 7 from my laptop, should have mentioned that! I know the peripherals and display aren't great but as you presumed, I am limited by budget, and those are the areas where I had to make savings! I know it's a cheap one, but is the monitor really that awful?
I wouldn't skimp on monitor. It's your view on your desk and while using the Pc your spending £££ on to buy
my 2p drop the crappy wireless dongle and grab the edimax wireless N PCI card or if your running on a G network grab the excellent Abit Airpace. drop the wireless mouse and keyboard and grab wired one it will only annoy you havig to change the batteries all the time and unless your a million miles away from the PC it will save you money too. drop the monitor and grab the BenQ 2222DHL which is one of the best budget monitor around and it should be arond £120 also only save you a few pounds but do you need lightscribe if your never gunna use it grab a £11 normal DVD writer
Yes, always go with wired unless you really need the wireles option. Unless you put ALOT of stuff on your PC a 2tb HDD will not be needed so stick with 1tb. Personally I have never even come close to filling a 500gb HDD, but then I only game. I would lose the Arctic Freezer Pro, I used to have one, but the Hyper 212+ at just £2 more cools my CPU far better than the Pro ever did (I literally just replaced my Pro with the Hyper) Is the case a bottom mounted PSU? If so, are you sure the cable on your current PSU will reach the top of the mobo? When I swapped my crappy case with a HAF 912+ it took some serious manipulation to allow my PSU to reach the top of the mobo. Also, be sure to double check the Scan deals of the day - pretty much every day you can at least get the i5 2500K and the Asus Pro as a combo deal to save cash. Sometimes they have a big deal with those, Corsair memory and a Samsung HDD too.
I was actually just looking at that monitor, if I get it from Amazon its only £108, and free shipping! Plus that cuts down my shipping from Scan! Can anyone give me a link to a decent wireless card? I could wire a connection, but it'll take a pretty long lead, and Ive a 2 year old running about the place so wires don't tend to stay put very long.....! Asteldian, the psu is bottom mounted, its a couple of years old, is it likely to be too short?
Afraid I don't know but it is something to consider. The best thing to do is to check that the lead that connects to the top of your mobo now can stretch down to the bottom of your mobo (bare in mind with a bottom mounted PSU you either need to go round the mobo, or bypass the GPU and CPU cooler to connect it)
