Hi guys. i currently have a i7 920 build that works fine and still games well. i have been offered a 2600 bundle from a freind but do you think it would be worth it? i have also been looking at the 5650 cpu as that looks like a nice boost. what would you guys do? thank you
If it's a 2600k, I wouldn't mind swapping it if you don't mind overclocking. That said, an X5650 at 4.0Ghz or even 3.8Ghz will handily meet most processing requirements even today. Plus you get 2 more cores and 4 more threads. It really depends on how comfortable you are with overclocking.
If it's a freebie or cheap then the 2600 would be worth playing with. Otherwise in most cases when talking about gaming an X5650 is overkill!
True, You could always pick up those really cheap W series Xeons that have a base clock of 3.2Ghz. Those can overclock quite nicely and they're really cheap. Sandybridge isn't really huge upgrade unless you're getting a K series chip for free.
the i7 920 is a brilliant overlocker. If you haven't taken advantage of the overclockability, you should.
