I have this laptop on a domain network (Server 2k3) While its connected to the network it will connect to the domain and everthing is fine.

When the network is offline IE the latop has been taken off site and used somewhere else it will not finish loading windows. the user name and password will be entered the screen will clear and all you will have is the background no icons, nothing and CTRL + ALT + DEL doesnt work either

This is the Email i got sent from the customer

    Hi *****,

I am in El Paso, TX returning to *** on Monday. My laptop will not
boot. The night before I left Melbourne it failed to boot when I was
preparing to use it for an information session. We called IT but I'm
afraid the name of the fellow who came up to help escapes me. He got it
running but I don't think he did anything different. It acts like it is
booting up and it gets to the stage of displaying the home page wall
paper but it does not show any icons and the keyboard and brush pad are
completely dead. I have to use the power button to turn it off.

This laptop is my only *** pc. Can you please arrange an appointment
for me with the appropriate tech support person on Monday morning so I
can get back in operation as quickly as possible.

Well logons are generally slow when the computer can not access the domain. That may be the problem. He just didn't wait long enough.
