I wouldn't have voted for Labour at the last elections and probably won't at the next but whilst Tony Blair was in power, I was happy becuase he was vaguely interesting and a good public speaker. Gordon Brown bores me to tears I cannot believe that the rest of the party thought he could be the right man for the job.

Now, he was very unlucky at the begining but he didn't seize it and say "Yes, I can cope with this, I will be strong through it" he just well... I had probably fallen asleep.

And with the floods for example, sure it was bad for those who didn't ahve any insurance and yes, I know it hit in some really poor areas, but if you go and bail out all those who don't have insurance who is then going to get insurance? People will say "Oh it is all right, the government will bail us out" and the bills for this kind of thing (for the taxpayer) will just keep rising.

    Most likely May 2010.

One thing I really hate about the UK government is the fact we are part of the European Union and it's laws. The European Human Rights law needs to be scrapped and so many times criminals use the human rights law to get off on a lighter sentence (if any). Because of the human rights law and EU bureaucracy police have more paperwork and criminals have a field day. Because of the EU we have a huge influx of immigrants. The number of immigrants unemployed is high and as a result about 15% of the prison population are foriegners yet less than 15% of the UK population are foriegners. Because of the human rights law people can get state benefits for the silliest of things. We need a government with common sense but many politicians do not have it - they have been wrapped up in Westminster for so long many do not have any real sense of what it is like to be a normal working Briton in some city suburb.

I have always seen the EU one of the sources of the government's problems but unfortunately when we signed up for the EU (the then EC) we signed up forever. There is no exit from the EU. However I say sod the EU get out of it and sod the EU law, we are our own country and if we leave what are you going to about it? Nuke us? We should join the European Free Trade Association which just gives us the benefits of tax free trade with Europe (what we originally signed up for in the EC) and that is far enough.

I have been very general here and have no reference to facts and I know I am ranting about the EU and the government but its time someone did something. Britons are known for not taking enough action and that statement is indeed correct. Friends have always suggested I write a proper report with facts, figures and references and I may do so when I have time but I do not have a degree in law and politics!

    I never understood that.

How can there be "no exit"?

What're they going to do, request all their country men and women back?

No - But there is a level of charisma required - Brown has none. It doesn't make me want to believe in him, or half of what he says. Partly because I have to turn off and do something else before my brain leaks out my ears :/

    thanks Ramble and MrWillyWonka

a leader has to have charisma.... it is a requirement, or else no one will follow him.

You just made my point really! Under the terms of agreement we cannot leave the EU. But as I said:

Although we are headed by the EU I believe we still have enough power to be able to leave (illegally if you like) and to be able to defend ourselves - not just in military terms.

The only risk perhaps is the EU enforcing trade tax and embargos to other EU countries but there joining the ETFA should solve that (to an extent, there are complications but again they can be overcome).

I'm a little confused by the general tone of people. Every one complained when we had a slimy weaselly politician in charge (TB) now we have an honest (ish) man in charge every one is whining he's not a good politician etc. So they're going to vote for another slimy weaselly politician (DC). I can see where people are coming from his rhetoric isn't bad but have people learned nothing from Blair?

I think the problem with withdrawing from the EU would be that it would be economic suicide, look at Switzerland they've virtually no one to trade with. Britain might have managed 20 odd years ago with the commonwealth but lets face it were not that powerful any more.

Yes we can leave the EU, but these things would crop up (thank Yahoo)

No more holiday trips to EU countries without visas.
No more preferential access to EU markets.
No more influence over EU trade rules, although we would still have to obey them if we wanted to trade with the EU.
No more joint defence, aerospace or other high-tech projects (Airbus, Typhoon Eurofighter).
