At the end of the day, if most of us were hit by a bullet, we would do more than just say "ouch" and carry on with our day to day tasks I'm sure!
Also mind you, he doesn't have to actually fire the gun to make good use of it! There are other missions where absolute reliability is a necessity.
the big disappoint with the AK is how close the rear sight is to the front sight, which greatly reduces the accuracy. move that rear sight back and the gun will be a lot more accurate. for those in the US its not too hard to get your hands on assault rifles (as long as they arent banned in your state). you do need some sort of extra license but thats it.
Actually, the distance between the front and rear sights on the standard length AK is fairly close to that of an AR15. It's just a bit forward. Let's not turn this into an AK vs AR debate please?
i didnt even mention the AR. the AK has a very short front sight to rear sight distance and that is the main reason for poor accuracy in the gun. extending the distance even 5 or 6 inches would GREATLY increase accuracy.
i should probably not mention that AKs (not AKMs AFAIK) are rumored to be be DIRT cheap in SA/NAM, should I? by dirt cheap i mean between 150 and 400 Euros or so. Apparently. I wouldn't know...
Given that the Kalashnikov family is like the patron saint of premature death in Africa, I'm surprised it's even that much. Used to be about the price of a 1kg bag of sugar in Bakara in Mogadishu, IIRC; you guys are getting robbed blind.
LOL That's Mogadishu.. .and sugar can be DAMN expensive.... all I know is that there was a time where they mentioned "500-1000 Rand" - which would be about 40-80 GBP or so
They are $100 US in Lebanon, and $20 in Yemen. That usually includes a clip of ammo. I really haven't looked around here. But why would you want an AK here when the R4/5 is so readily available? It has more to do with build quality and training. The Valmet variants on the design are held in high regards, and formed the basis for the Galil and R4/5 series.
The Galil's a great gun, I had an AR model to play with for a few weeks courtesy of the IDF in 2008. Much prefer it to the M16 (M4s never really made it big over there) and it's impossible to jam. Admittedly, I still can't shoot for toffee, but it's fun nonetheless...
This! There's a couple of R-series (R1's and R4/5's) rifles around here still (some farmers that never gave them back)... and I can say from personal experience that an R1 is something ferocious to shoot in auto. Although i have no experience to compare it to.
It was going to happen eventually so i figured i might aswell say it now. Again, ARs with the carbine length handguards (i.e. most of them) have that same sight distance. What i'm trying to get to is, it doesn't seem to hurt THAT gun or at least i don't hear anyone complaining about it so it can't be the main reason. Not if you can line them up at least.
Build quality yes, but I found it to be very accurate from day one. I had no previous experience with firearms, but I easily got the score needed for a day off After some training at 150 m the circle of hits was maybe about 20 cm or something in diameter. Again, not so great for hunting, but easily enough for army needs..
Jpa, did they actually give the Fiskars bayonets out to you guys, or was that more of a theoritical piece of equipment just for good measure? Info seems to be rather scarce on these.
@C-Sniper, True but i seriously doubt that you have the legal hardware to fire 20mm round. The 7.62mm is a bitch when you get hit by it so don't start calling it "for pussies" you'd be scared if it was staring you in the face, I know i would
