haha, great tread! Must be awesome to finally be able to drink, its been so long i can barely remember!

Uni got me into drinking propperly, before that i didn't think so much of it other than the odd party etc.

I started off only drinking ale, but soon realised i had a sweet tooth and started drinking ciders. Now i love lager again, it all goes in circles.

Currently have a bottle of Lefe sat beside me, loving European beers, a good tipple to have in the pub is Zywiec, pronounced Juviets, lots think its got an "ech" on the end but you'll get laughed at in Poland for trying it. Heinekenen, Amstel, Budvar, Bierra Moretti, Hogarden, then Swedish ciders like Kopperburg, Rekorderlig are great, someone has already spoken of Brothers which is awesome, but best and most originally enjoyed in a field at Glastonbury!

The options are endlous, Nexxo has good tastes for Gin and whiskey, but you never know until you try. Regards to rum i highly suggest an Australian rum called Bunday, its really nice with coke, probably the nicest rum i've come across.

At uni we use to drink snakebite and black by the jug, half a strongbow, half a carling and a shot of blackcurrant, good stuff. End up on the likes of flatliners, a shot of tequila, sambucca and tobasco sauce, or a rusty nail made from irish wiskey and drambue, lethal stuff.

Vodka i'm currently loving is Sobieski, Polish made and lovely and smooth, best enjoyed on a card table in a bucket of ice and a few shot glasses!

Southern Comfort, Lime & Lemonade > tastes like loveheart sweets.

Advocate, Vodka & Lemonade > snowballs ( no, the other kind of snowballs you pervs ).

I also recommend a real English Cider like Blackthorn, or ask for a pint of 'Cloudy'- proper job.

Drinking is subjective. You need to get out there and try everything. I particularly find recommendations of wine pointless, as a delicious wine to one person, is vinegar to another. Personally I like Rosé wine over both white and red.

Firstly find out what types of alcohol you like. Once you know you hate Vodka (as an example) you can save yourself a lot of money on buying an expensive bottle someone on a forum recommended. And once you know you love Whiskey, you can go and delve into all the many types out there.

So just try out normal brands for now.

Or just mix everything and get shite-faced haha

    Go slow :D
Start with beer, you just don't really, really knock yourself out with that. Your body will go into FIFO mode before anything too strange happends.
Don't worry if it comes out clearer than it goes in though :naughty:

Than...the sin of the nineties, Malibu-Cola, a great beginners drink...it's just so very easy to drink and continue (until you notice you can't stand anymore)

Also, for the worst...Lumumba. Well anything with milk in it, makes for fantastic throw-up orgies. :D

Everything pure and hard...go slow, it'l start working later than you think.
Ever seen a movie where a guy or girl takes a few shots and is drunk immediately? Doesn't work that way. :nono: (Americans believe this and will act this way when just sniffing a drink...show I tell you)
With the hard stuff your body doesn't slam on the brakes till it's too late, so be slow and drink in good company.

Ooooh, I've not seen that before, might need to give that a try.

For me it's Jack Daniels straight or with coke and any decent cider. I'm hoping you've grown out of Strongbow and Blackthorn by now Jake

The problem with this is you do have cases where an moderately expensive bottle of a spirit tastes different to a cheap bottle. I've seen it on numerous occasions where people have been introduced to vodka by drinking smirnoff and have subsequently been turned off it. It's not until i've got them to try something a little more expensive like stoli or grey goose that they've realised not all vodkas taste like smirnoff and some of them are quite nice. I guess the point i'm making is that you can't really decide what alcohol you like until you've tried the expensive stuff, making a decision based on just the cheap stuff is going to lead to you missing out on drinks you may really like.

+1 for green goblin cider... or any Thatchers cider, the 'Vintage 20xx' is nice, but due to the nature of it it can vary [imo the '09 was nicer than the '10]

If your like I was at 18 then you won't be making much money at Burger King in a part time job so I carried on home-brewing. Once you have found a beer you like its dead easy to start making your own. Its cheaper, normally stronger and tastes a whole load better. The easiest beer I have come across to make is alcoholic ginger beer only about 11% as well but once you open a bottle you have to drink it within 24 hours. Any way I hope you remember being 18 more than I do :D

done a bit of reading about this one, I think I know what my small(ish) celebration will be when I get my credit cards and student loans paid off now. The ones I suggested are cheap(er) while still good enough to not mix, imo.

I agree with Nexxo on the Stoli. I've had Grey Goose and thought it was over-rated (and over-priced). Haven't had Purity or Chase though.

    But again, just my opinion.

Another note, does anyone have any suggestions for a good Tequila? Been looking into getting one that's decent but all I've ever had was on the level of Jose Cuervo...

I've finished 3/4 of a bottle by myself in one weekend at a LAN, offered shots around to everyone else there (around 40ppl) and only a few were brave enough to try it after smelling it, let alone have more than one :D

Hrm you make a fair point to an extent. Smirnoff is not a very nice vodka to be honest. I think a person would be better trying Absolute and going from there tbh. With Whiskey starting with Teachers or Jack Daniels would be an adequate starting point I feel.

With me as an example, because I like Whiskey, Brandy and dark Rum in general, I can drink pretty much any variant and know I will enjoy it. Sure cheap whiskey/brandy is not as a good as the expensive stuff, but it will be a darn site more enjoyable than drinking Barcardi or Smirnoff.

I can drink anything, but over the years I have discovered that dark spirits are more agreeable with me. Not only do I prefer the taste, but they don't turn me into a ****** while I'm drunk. I also don't get hideous hangovers on them, like I do with clear spirits.
