i just read in my computer magazine ("CPU" Dec. 2004, Vol. 4 Iss. 12) that micro$haft has released a program to block sp2 from auto update and windows update.

go to www.microsoft.com and search for "xpsp2blockertools.exe" then follow the instructions.

or you could just click here--> clicky

    gosh I'm so nice

PS i got stuck on the part where it asks you where to put it, (i thought they meant somewhere deep within the registry) i just did it on the desktop ( :naughty: ) and ran the program

Why not just get SP2? It's about 1000x more secure... and I've yet to have ANY issues on any of the PCs I've installed it on.

Yes, I have noticed "XPSP2Blocker.exe" in the system32 folder on a few machines in for service. I usually delete it, and proceed to install SP2.

I can see why someone would want to not install SP2 though. When it first came out, there were a lot of issues.

Even now, if someone has certain things then SP2 will totally mess up the PC beyond recovery. For example, if they ever had TV Media (spyware), you have to apply a patch to make sp2 work. If you don't (even after TVM was removed), SP2 will bomb the PC. After that, you might be able to uninstall sp2 and then apply the patch, and re-apply sp2, but that is a long-shot.

Given this one example, I assume that the SP2 blocker was made to delay the automatic installation of SP2 or availability to the end user, to sort out any issues before ITs go and install it on every computer in a large corporation.

It just so happened, that perhaps certain spyware also uses that application to further prolong its ability to reign over a pc.

i just don't want to ever have compatibility issues with the programs i use, there are some programs that aren't exactly legal (according to the RIAA) that i use and I want to be able to continue using them.

    and I'm lazy

Not had any problems with SP2, or any of the software I've got. eMule is one of the ones that'll have a slight hiccup with one of the changes Microsoft included, there are fixes on the net for the tcpip.sys file if you need them. Normally you won't need to bother.

PS: Calling Microsoft M$ or Micro$haft really ruins all credibility you may have had.
PPS: SP2 will only be blocked from WU for a certain period of time, after that it'll try to autoupdate again.
PPPS: You can simply turn off showing SP2 in the install list in your WindowsUpdate client, you don't need to bother with extra software.

not installing updates doesn't necessarily mean you have an insecure pc. i don't have sp2 installed, and i have auto updates turned off. i only install the updates i feel are absolutely necessary, which are few, and i have yet to get a virus or the like.

I have plenty of those programs and no issues.

Even IE is better in SP2 although I still much prefer firefox.

When I had to completely wipe a system and start fresh because of SP2, thats when I started boycotting it until it matures to SP2a..

System was stable as he)) until I installed SP2, after constant BSODs.. Even sitting idle not doing anything, poof! BSOD..

I'm_Not_A_Monster, thank you for that info!

The only difference between SP1 and SP1a is that SP1a doesn't contain the Microsoft JVM. It wasn't re-released to fix anything else.

I have no problems with SP2, I've installed it on 8 or 9 different machines, and as long as you actually do a full install and don't let Windows Updater do it for you, most people are fine.
