I've recently been playing alot of Civ V whilst doing other things around the house due to the turn based nature of the game. Can anyone recommend me any good turn based games for when I don't feel like Civ?
Frozen Synapse. It's a quirky little game, cheap and I've got a fair few hours out of it so far. Sent from my Orange San Francisco using Tapatalk
Cheers guys. I've got Frozen Synapse (from one of the Humble Bundles) so will put some more time into that and also look at the other suggestions.
I have shogun 2 voucher 50% that I won't use if you want it Sent from my Lumia 800 using Board Express
Cheers for the offer but I managed to get a copy of the MP a while back that I haven't got around to playing yet.
Someone mentioned Shogun 2 and I agree with that suggestion. The total war series are probably the only turn-based games I play being more of a RTS, FPS and action RPG fan.
Update on Shogun 2 now that I've played a fair bit of it. It is a really fantastic game, the first Total War to give me a sensible challenge (rather than just suddenly spawning 8 full-stack Hun armies on your doorstep a la Medieval 2 ). The competitive multiplayer is ****ing terrible: there aren't enough players so you get matched against people who have not only played hundreds of hours, but also have seriously elite units that stomp across your army. However, the ability to play a campaign with a mate is quite amazing - I highly recommend it.
For fantasy wargames, I'd agree with the recommendations for Age of Wonders and its sequels (the Wizard's Throne and Shadow Magic - though the GOG versions apparently do not include the excellent manuals) along with Domionions 3 (a province-based rather than hex-based game with hundreds of unit types and spells - a look at its forum should give a good idea of depth of gameplay). Heroes of Might and Magic III Complete is another one to check out, being a well-balanced game that just seems to get most things right - easy to get into but with lots of fine detail to master. Galactic Civilizations 2 I'd rate however as mediocre (I've not tried the expansions though) due to its simplified mechanics and missed opportunities (e.g. ground combat consists of watching two sets of numbers count down - the first to zero loses) - Master of Orion 2 would be a better bet if you want a simple-ish space empire builder. Space Empires V is very much the other side of the scale, being one of the most complex with a breathtaking amount of choice in research, ship/unit design and the ability (with advanced enough tech) to build ships capable of destroying planets and stars. Its UI (and AI, without mods) is its weak point though. Civilization Call to Power 2 is another game worth checking (though it will require modding - the Apolyton mod is worth a look, while Ages of Man makes for a far tougher game) since it included innovations missing from the Sid Meier series (army-on-army combat, public works, sea cities, etc) - however I've not played Civ V (boycotted due to it requiring Steam) so I can't say how that compares. On the role-playing side, modern TBS examples include Eschalon Book 1 and Book 2 plus the Spiderweb games (Avadon being their most recent release). For D&D gaming, Temple of Elemental Evil would be your best bet giving a sold implementation of turn-based combat (real-time otherwise) but again, modding is needed - specifically the Circle of Eight Modpack.
Another +1 to frozen synapse, or go a bit retro with my favourite games of all time - the x-com series.
Personally I thought Frozen Synapse was crap. I thought it was even inferior to games like Syndicate (the original), from 90 years ago. But that's just imo. I like AstralWanderer's list up there.
I think you mean from the 90s. If Syndicate the original game was 90 years old it was way way way ahead of its time.
Don't play turn based games. They're boring. Just get all the other things done around the house then play a non boring game.
