I'm inordinately pleased by all the Web 2.0 hate in here. I'm of the same mind.

I went back to facebook purely because of its usefulness as a messaging platform (it's like email, except you can actually find people easily), but the way a lot of people my age use it makes me not want to use it at all. The constant angst updates, internet activism, political soapboxing, couples drama, 10-year-old Caturday pictures and IM conversations held in comment feeds just wind me up. And I'm all of 25.

Twitter makes sense to me as a news stream from important organisations and celebrities - you can get updates on what your favourite bands, sports teams, actors etc. are doing - but the regular use it mostly gets, where randoms post incessant updates about what they're wearing and how much they're enjoying their lunch, makes me think there should be some sort of eligibility criteria before you're allowed to create an account.

I mean, NASA, Tom Hiddleston or Roger Federer having Twitter accounts and keeping their fans apprised of developments makes perfect sense. Terry Scumballs from down the road having one and narrating every day of his life as a bricklayer in short sentences, all ending in "lol", makes me want to punch him in the dick.

    edit -
    This. All the time.

No Idea! Didnt even put any captions on it or anything. Guess Instagram couldn't handle 1000rwhp in one picture. :D

I use Twitter. Sure, it isn't the place for long messages, but there's a very active medical community on there that is a fantastic source of support - nowhere else can I get a question on obscure medical matters answered quickly by consultants and specialists. There's valuable training going on through various hashtags and accounts, plus it's also a social network to vent and communicate. I've actually made friends on Twitter who have become 'real life' friends and colleagues.

Yes, it's full of crap, but you can filter that easily by choosing who you follow. My feed is free of celebrity nonsense, and most retweets are insightful, educational or simply interesting.

Facebook? I barely use it personally in the sense of sharing updates etc about my own life, with the exception of big events (like my wedding) where it can be useful to share photographs with distant family and friends. My profile is heavily restricted, and so is anything I stick up. Again, I also filter my newsfeed to avoid all the 'play this game' and whatnot, and my main use is groups that essentially act as message boards. Facebook can be used as login credentials for some things, which isn't a bad thing, but I never ever allow external sites/apps to post things on my behalf.

Social media has huge value, but you need to understand it and know how to control it.

Proudly in the miserable old git category here. Facebook is locked down, seventeen friends and not accepting new requests unless I both know you and enjoy your company. No cell phone, so can't be addicted to that. I use the net to learn things and buy stuff I can't get here. I refuse to let it have any more of my life.

They have a strickt "no car pr0n" policy? :D

Well, that's the modern life, bricklayers used to put down a brick, have a beer, then lay down another brick.
If the tweet between bricks, at least it's healthier (and the wall get's less wobbly)

I get the important organisation bit but important celebrities? I have to question whether such a thing exists.

I can see the appeal of Twitter / FB from a pure technical sense as the idea behind it is sound. What I don't understand is the entire culture that has sprung up from these platforms.

I don't use either (well I use FB to find out if my local retro store has anything nice in) and I have no real interest in doing so either.

I'm 28 BTW so not really an age thing. My wife is also the same.

Maybe Zylch is a better platform for those of you who don't like the intrusiveness of Facebook. ;)

    That aside,
I have a Facebook account, but usually only check it a few times a week. As has already been said, it's quite handy for talking to friends you don't see often.

I use Farcebook just to keep in touch with distant family and friends and as for Twatter, I'm a bit of a weather geek and use it for weather news and that's about it.
