I was trying to get hold of Xubuntu 7.04 (feisty fawn) after reading the 'create your own server' guide on this here website. I struggled like crazy to actually get hold of this particular distro, now why is this?

And before you say it, yes I am well aware that it was 3 years ago and they have 10.10 out now, and that the later distro - the better; but I am curious as to why I can just about get hold of 6,8,9 but not 7

Was there something wrong with 7.04?

You can only get hold of their LTS (long term support) versions after so long.

6.04 was LTS, 8.04 was LTS. 9.04/9.10 have not been withdrawn yet and 10.04 is LTS.

I believe 6.04 will disappear before too long for the same reasons.

Ah right, that makes sense. Does that mean it is a fools errand to try and get hold of it then?

I would say that most of that guide can be applied to 10.10, I remember trying it on 9.something and getting most of it done. Might require a slightly different approach in some areas, but I am sure people on here can help. Now where is Glider when you need him :hehe:

If you were really wanting 7.04, I might have it on disk somewhere.

Linux versions are not like windows versions... Just use the latest, and 99% will work... For that 1% that doesn't, there are plenty of fools lurking here (including me) that have some basic Linux knowledge ;)

Ok thanks all for getting back to me.

One possibly idiotic question time: I feel that visually, 7.04 is nicer than 10.10. Now I know that this isn't exactly important in a server, but I am using this to learn things, and I like it to be aesthetically pleasing :) Any way to get the 7.04 logon screen and theme in a later distro? Is that doable?

    Cheers

You could stick on 8.04, it'll probably be closer to 7.04.

Failing that, try googling for a theme? It'll only be a theme somewhere I would've thought :)

If you want reasonable feature stability then I would go with the LTS *ubuntu releases.

Hardy is getting a bit old now so I recommend Lucid (10.04).
However you should check to make sure that the apps you want to run are compatible with the new version.
With Open Source it is extremely unlikely that there will be a problem in this, though the new app versions often have annoyingly different configuration setups.
More modern versions of Ubuntu tend to easier to install and are more compatible with new pc hardware.
With Lucid patches will be produced until 2013 for the desktop and 2015 for the server edition.

Different desktop environments are provided by
    Ubuntu: Gnome
    Kubuntu: Kde
    Xubuntu: xfce
    + others

For each environment a number of Themes are available, Google is your friend for howtos on this.

    Best Regards

If you really must use an old version then

    old-releases.ubuntu.com

    is the site to try

    i.e.:

    http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/releases/7.04/

    or for xubuntu

    http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/releases/xubuntu/ports/releases/gutsy/release/

I really don't recommend it though as there are no patches/security updates* for this release anymore and upgrading the old releases is slow as you have to do it one release at a time.

    Best Regards

    * Note without patching 7.04 is vulnerable to USN-612-1 http://www.ubuntu.com/usn/usn-612 a ssl lib vulnerability which is important if you use ssh to manage the box (from the internet).
