The fireworks over here are for Nov. 5th - "Guy Fawkes Night". It commerates the "Gunpowder Plot" to kill King James I at the Houses of Parliament.

Unfortunately they start selling fireworks about 2 months before the event, and irritating little ****s get hold of them (even though there's an age restriction on selling them - you have to be eighteen IIRC, but that's physical years, not a mental age).

the age restriction laws in this country aint enforced anywhere near enough, i see 12 year old kids smoking and drinking alchohol. dont think that the laws stop kids buying fireworks either. and then there is the tradition of the 30th of october also known as "misschief night" around here, thats when all the tricks are carried out, and then the same ****ers come round the next day and ask for sweets and money.

a while back there was some discussion about a new law that fireworks could only be set off on certain days of the year, or on a certain date if you get a licence to do it, if you got cought on the wrong day without a licence you got fined and possibly locked up - don't know what happened to it though, havent heard anything since, although i think the suggestion was probably thrown out.

That's pretty much what it's like in NY State. You need a license to buy/use fireworks - if you don't have one and are setting them off, you could end up in the county jail with a big fine.

Same here. Unfortunately there's a lot of loaded people out here who think that because they live in the sticks it's perfectly reasonable to set off mortars EVERY Saturday night starting at 23:00. It's the only reason I'm pleased my cat's deaf now. :grr:

In areas with a large Indian population you may also find that a lot of the fireworks that are set off about this time of year are to celebrate Diwali (they certainly do round here, and not in half measures). This year Diwali is not until 25th of October IIRC, but still, people can't resist leaving their fireworks alone once they've bought them.

We get a nice free display because of all the people setting them off around this time of year where I live, though it does sound like a bad day in Beirut because of the constant noise :duh: which is a pain in the backside when all you want to do is sleep.

lol @ thought of mini world war in ur backgarden.

They havn't started round here yet, but then again I live in a nice quiet village where biggest disturbance re:fireworks we've had in recent years was Christmas Eve 1998 when some pooper in the hotel behind my house let off a huge one at about 10pm... needless to say a lot of kiddies woke up to find that Santa wasn't quite the man they thought he was :eeek:
