    I want to upgrade my processor from a 850 (oced to 1.1) up to a 1300/1400 (just for a little bit of extra perk!) however my ABIT KT7-Raid board is only capable of running a 200FSB and most chips I can find are 266FSB. What would be the side effects of running one a 266fsb chip on a 200fsb motherboard? I want to get 14*100 out of it at least.

    it can be done but i think you will need an unlocked T Bird for the best results.

    [EDIT: If i remember rightly, 1400 T-Birds are unlocked anyway]

    A 266FSB chip will run @ 200FSB with no side effects etc
    Im pretty sure that a 200 will run at 266 also since there's no physical difference, just what they were 'designed' for

    I know for a fact a 266 FSB chip wil run at 200 FSB as I used ot run my 1.2 GHz chip on an Asus A7V (200 FSB Only)

    But you can get 200 and 266sfb 1.2ghz chips - which one did you have? (I'm guessing 266 but would like to know!)

    Yeah the chip was a 266 FSB chip running at 12 x 100.

    Will a 266 cpu work in a 200 board? Interested in upgrading cpu now and holding out for a bit longer on a new motherboard. Current board is Abit kt7-raid.
    ===============================
    Boy, this must have been one of the most frequently asked question in thisng. I just answered the same question three times yesterday. =)

    In general, the answer is yes it'll work. The hard and fast rule is that on the KT7, the FSB has to run at 100 (give or take 10, depending on OC results). Can't support 133. Therefore, we have three cases:
    - if your 266 CPU is locked, you'll be running it at 100FSB instead of 133FSB, meaning the overall frequency will be about 75% of advertised (100/133 to be precise).
    - if your 266 CPU is unlocked and advertised frequency is <= 1.2G, you can run it at full speed by translating it to 100FSB, eg. for a 1.2G CPU, run it at 12x100 instead of 10.5x133.
    - if your 266 CPU is unlocked and advertised frequency is > 1.2G, you can only run it at 12.5x100 = 1.25G max, because the KT7 will only go beyond 12.5x multiplier with *locked* L1 bridges. If the bridges are unlocked, it cannot detect the multiplier.

    To run it at anything above 1.2G, you need to update your BIOS to 3R or newer.

    Thanks for the quick reply. Shoulda done a more thorough search for applicable posts rather than the quick scan...

    So, a locked 1400 will actually run at 1050 (100x10.5), while an unlocked 1400 could be run at the 100x14 to achieve the 1400 clock speed (albeit slower real-world due to reduced bus) if my bios is 3r or greater (it is)?
    ===============================
    Not really...

    A locked 1400/266 will run at 1050. (My first case below.)

    A locked 1400/200 will run at 1400 with no problem.

    An unlocked 1400/266 or 1400/200 (if it's unlocked, the multiplier doesn't matter) will run at 1250. (My third case below.)

    This is only referring to the KT7. If you have a KT7A, you should have no problem running any of the above CPUs at full advertised speed.
    ===============================
    After finding this info it seems that I would only be able to go from 1.1ghz to 1.25ghz with a 266fsb chip - so I think I'd rather hang on for a 1400mhz 200fsb chip :) Better safe than sorry.

    1.2ghz athlons were all factory unlocked and all the chips after...

    Trust us Mat, a 266 will work fine!

    I don't doubt the problem seems to be with the motherboard not the chip - I'm still unsure, and it's not worth the hassle to see a 105mhz upgrade!

    The only way I can get 1400 on my Abit kt7-raid is with a 1400/200fsb chip, casue after x12.5 the motherboard needs a locked CPU. It seems the chips multiplier is different on 100 _> 133 so a 1400 266fsb chip (unlocked) can only be run at 12.5xfasb (possibly 110 if I'm lucky, but I don't like upping fsb as I do a lot of work with scsi cards that don't like it). However if the motherboard can be clocked to whatever x then it should work, just not with my abit kt7... I was reading on the amdmb.com website that some users have got xp chips working on a kt7raid mb though!
