So I just got the choice to swap my P4 2.4B and motherboard for an equaly good motherboard plus am AMD athlon 64 3400+ and about $50. So my question to you is should I do it, will there be any differance in my games and general computer usage?
Definately. The performance difference will be immediate and significant - even before the overclocking starts.
Yes. You should feel so guilty, you pass the deal onto me Nah mate, take it. You'll be impressed, A64 pwn j00
I think I am going to try to grab this deal. The new MOBO I will be getting is a Gigabyte GA-K8NS anyone know if this is any good? The specs on it look good to me.
NF4-4X, doesnt officiall support 1000 HTT. Should still have 4xsata, but no DPS or SIL based SATA raid. It'll do the job for you and should oc well.
Have you already got pc3200 ram? if not then you'll have to upgrade that too, or suffer a huge performance drop.
i have a 3400 and im absolutely loving it. never even thought about a p4 when i built my rig. absolutely a must! take advantage of what this processor can do!
Yes I bought 1GB of PC3200. Now I just have to wait until the 18th of may to get the rest of the parts and try it out. I am really excited about it. A small side question, should I go through the trouble of finding a copy of the 64 bit version of windows?
nah just stick with 32bit windows for now. I tryed win64 beta a while back (about a month and a half ago) and it was crashing left right and center.. and its a right pain to find 64bit drivers for things!
no way leave it a year or two before it becomes main strem its still being developed and badly lacks drivers if you want to go 64 bit OS then get Linux suse 9.2 or whatever...
Would there be that much of a performance leap if i were to go to say a 64 bit version of linux over a 32 bit windows version?
My guess would be a 64 bit OS will almost always beat out a 32 bit one. The problem is, gaming is a pain to get working in linux, so if you are worried about gaming, I'd stick with windows. If you can find the 64 bit drivers for windows, I'd say go for it. It will perform about the same as standard xp pro, but when you get applications compiled for 64-bit OS's the advantage becomes obvious. I still haven't gotten 64 bit linux to work on my laptop, but man this AMD 64 is way better than my P4 desktop sitting next to it! (at work anyway, my home PC is an Athlon XP, which is still slower than this laptop, of course)
