With CeBit just around the corner... it’s that time of the year again, the whole industry seems to spring into action - updated technologies, higher clock speeds, and even better performance than before. I’m sure there are going to be some interesting releases hitting the shelves over the next couple of months.

Here we take a look at AMD’s second edition in their FX line of processors, the FX-53...

An excellent second review for the site from bigZ and a nice little processor too, any questions or comments?

Took some great generousity from Xen0phobiak by lending me his Corsair TwinX1024-3200LL, as I've only got 512Mb kits of PC3500 myself, which made for a slight dilema. I've used Windows XP Pro Service Pack 1 in all of my reviews because it's the latest Operating System, and many people will use that over my preferred operating system (Windows 2000 professional). I've kept the OS with absolutely no tweaks, because I believe that the tests should be repeatable by everyone. It's a fresh install with standard drivers and all of the latest updates from windowsupdate.

I mentioned about the heat from the Prescott in the conclusion, this was no joke... I burnt my finger on the heatsink while checking that the heatsink was actually doing its job. You will hear more about the Prescott in due course as our review will be out in the near future.

My own interpretations of BTX are pictured below.

Thanks for the kind comments :)

    WHAAAAAAT!

You'd have to be a brain donor to pay that!

    Barton 2500 + Motherboard = ~£130

    FX 53 + Motherboard = ~£815

Compared to an overclocked barton you get at best a 5% to 10% performace increase for a whopping 630% price increase. Add in the extra cost of registered memory and it gets even worse.

    No thanks!

Yeah it's expensive, but I would have to say it's the fastest thing out at the moment :)

The target market for this processor is for consumers who believe that money is no object, for that market it does offer stunning performance :)

Yes it was very interesting, however you have to remember that the FX-53 can be overclocked too, but I decided that it was a good way to show how £400 of the ~£675 could be spent on getting something that will perform damn well, also the cooling setup is a fairly long term investment, you're not going to have to change a cooling setup hugely over time, maybe just change the blocks every now and again :)

Tell me about it!!! I could cope with being equal first.... but now I'm torn between spending more money, and waiting for the new socket, PCI Express, BTX debacle to be resolved.

However... FX53... Mmmm.... Oh God.. someone hide my credit card!

I normally only employ that fan when I'm running my 9600XT @ insane volts and clocks :hip:
