    That game speedup is quite remarkable, and odd that it needs special code really, I mean normally CPU optimizations only speed up very narrow functions, like using the intel video encoding stuff or using the AES speedup extension, but this seems more wide in scope then.

    That's not even close to being true. CPU-specific compiler optimisations make a huge difference: I've got a 30 percent speed boost from Google's Guetzli JPEG compressor simply by using the -Ofast flag in gcc.
