Never liked the idea of integrated CPUs and GPUs, it's like colour ink cartriges, you might have more than enough cyan but you need replace the whole cartrige to get more magenta, although a bit more expensive (well not much more expensive if you're comparing it with lexmark cartriges).

For the average home user I can see this as a good alternative to a GPU integrated onto the motherboard, but I can't see this really working for even the budget gamers. People usually need to upgrade thier GFX card alot more than thier CPU nowerdays. I can easily game at full settings with a CPU thats been around for an age (like a 3GHz P4), but I wouldn't be able to game at full settings with a GPU of the same age.

But with something like this in your average family home PC I can see this as a big improvement, problem with the most common on-board GPUs like that of intel is they just don't support the functions some games need (there were alot of annoyed families around the time of the sims 2 release because thier intel GPU had enough RAM but lacked the functions the game needed).

That most likely will not happen as currently Intel is the largest provider of GPUs with over 50% of the market even if they are intergrated. Intel has the R&D staff and budget to develop it own high end GPU if they wanted to. But as it stands now they don't need to. Also it is not a econimical move for intel

But what if the CPU/GPU thingy was still at the same price as a CPU or GPU is today? Then you'd be saving even more money even when you have to keep replacing it with a better one.

I like the whole integrated support system. Much nicer then AMDs original one.

Basically it's not such a big deal, IMO. What we're going to see is integratred graphics replaced by on-die graphics and discreet graphics will remain discreet (until the credit card bill comes).

I like the modular idea better than the all in one plan thats coming. If I could upgrade my video card further than I wouldnt need a new computer for a while still. If I was stuck with what was out at the time of my processors release I would have upgraded twice by now.

Five words: discrete graphics will not die :)

It's more aimed at the lower end of the market - business customers, "family PCs", etc IMO. I think it's going to be an interesting few years in the lead up to these kind of changes in the industry. I just hope it's a world better than Intel's integrated graphics which, as Mark Rein has said, 'are damaging PC games development'.

Exactly what I was thinking, everyone gets these cheapo dells and bases their entire computer gaming experience off of that. A high end intel gfx chip dosent hold a candle to what a mid to low level ati or nvidia card can do, and 256mb of ram is nothing anymore to even attempt to game with.

that rating is so skewed though. because those are all integrated. so its not like most of those purchased aren't upgraded to something better. or mobile processors that don't matter. nvidia and ati are for niche markets. but i guess market share is market share.

I wonder if they would do the Dragonball-Z fusion dance! Infact i can allready see Ati and Amd dance around each other trying to "fuse" together...

    :D
