Acrim has officially gotten pissed off. He's tired of people going off-topic in the off-topic forum, so this is my solution. If you have any opinion about America -- and I know you do :D -- post it here. This may develop into a debate, or it may be a whole bunch of flaming, or it may just get deleted, but per the forum guidelines this would be the place to go crazy.

Be formal, informal, wordy, or terse, but have fun and make your opinion be heard.

Is this such a good idea? :worried: I suspect polite conversation will last about as long as the half-life of Ununbium (0.3 miliseconds, if you want to know)...

you have to understand something - there is not only one america; there is a) The american government b) the american people c) the american fantics (a subset of the american people)

For myself, I distrust, and dare I say fear the American government; as for the american people I feel they represent the worst and the best of the world. I often think to myself that America is a mini-earth. As for the american fanatics, I have nothing but distaste for them - how ignorant can you be to fight, die, kill, and scorn others because you were told your country is better than any other, with no proof or qeustioning - these people I hate, even more than the American government.

All in all, I think america as a country is imploding and its trying to take the rest of the world with it. lets hope it doesnt succeed.

im not voting, because i dont dislike america, theres alot of good stuff that goes on there. charitable stuff, world aid stuff and so on, and the fact the news only reports the bad stuff only makes them seem worse. However, i dont agree with the amount a large proportion of them eat, and how the major companies advertise food and stuff like that. I dont agree with gun poilicies there and some of the stupid law suits which are taken into court.

i dont agree with their current drink laws or driving laws, or the fact the english language has been twisted and changed by them :p (j/k, i guess, about the language :p)

So i neither love nor hate them.

I gotta agree with you there. But also emphasise at the same time I like many american people and there are a LOT of really cool people over there. Unfortunatly they are all drawn with the same brush far too often and it brings these decent people down.
Its the same as every country or religion though. Its like saying all muslems are terrorists which is absoultely and wholey untrue. People dont wanna look further than the end of their nose, and they are as bad as a) or c).

Bogoimp - you cant say you dont agree with it if you dont live there. It's a different culture and different people. Just because they are western and speak english doesnt mean they are the same as us. You can judge them or any country by the same way you judge a British person.

How can anyone answer this post, the question is so vague.
There are a lot of things I like about America whilst there are many things I don't, much the same as I feel about the UK, or any country for that matter.

Like wise, I've got a lot of family between here and the states thanks to a history and a shortage of potatoes :D

I love my friends and family out in the states, I've never met such a hospitable people and I've done a lot of travelling in the states. However I have nothing good to say about the government and the large corporations (basically a good chunk of the rich). They both mislead the kind hearted, honest and hard working people who prop up their joint regime. It is the people who have ‘made it’ and cease taking responsibility for the consequences of their actions who are screwing the country and everyone in it.

Despite both myself and my partner having nearly half our family in the states neither of us would move out there, its not an environment either of us would like to raise our children in because of what I have have already mentioned (We are considering Canada though :naughty: )

The only really bad thing about the USA is playing parent to the rest of the squabbling world with the UK playing uncle and saying 'now do what the USA tells you to do otherwise you'll get a spanking'. The UK plays along with what we do so look in the mirror instead of across the pond.

But since no one else seems to be stepping up the plate as world leader I guess we don't have much of a choice. Are we doing the best job at it? Certainly not. Like any parent we are making mistakes(iraq). But with Cuba, N. Korea, Pak and Ind, collapse of the Soviets and their nukes... well, lets just say I rather not let Spain and France take point.

No offense - this thread is a retarded idea and people will get angry quickly if they start voicing their real opinion.

It should be in the test forum at BEST. I always thought Serious Discussion was...well...serious.

That's the point of the thread. Have a serious conversation if you must. Flame if you must. It's a thread with the sole intention of hearing what people have to say -- no matter the medium. Stay on topic.

Besides, I like it when people get angry. It makes my insides tickle.

I guess by America, you mean the United States. Why can't anyone just stick to the actual name? I'm a US citizen and I'll be the first one to bash this country. I say it sucks and makes me sick sometimes....

I like my country. It's really not fair to compare all americans though, to the people you see in the news and such. Every country has a good share of asshats I suppose. It kinda feels like everyone judges american on the wrong people. Kinda like if we judged all of england by how the Chav's acted and behaved. Jut not fair..

    Anywho, just my thoughts..

IMHO the US (America to me mean the continent which includes all the South American countries) Is like anyother country.. It probably has the same percentage of oddballs, nuts etc.. as any other developed country.. It just gets more attention because it is the most powerfull at the moment and therefor gets more media attention.

Hey when England ruled the word.. we were probably as hated if not more.. (and in some places still are :sigh: )

Blame every US politician who has said "God bless America" in the last few weeks, I'm damn sure they didn't mean to include the Canadians, Mexicans, etc.

A particularly grating and arrogant phrase, the Lord's Prayer asks for forgiveness and for us to forgive others. Bush's God is not my God.

A recent TV poll asked half-a-dozen US citizens why they thought so many outsiders disliked the States. Two said "They're just jealous of us". What a moronic attitude, but one that crops up time and again. A 3rd world peasant might be impressed by TV and coca-cola, and the prospect of an easy life, surrounded by luxuries, but reality doesn't work like that. A political refugee would be better off with any form of freedom. A poor foreigner may be prepared to take any menial job or be attracted by free handouts. You have that with your illegal immigrants, just as the UK does.

Just what has the USA got for the rest of the world to be envious of? Low crime? Good education? Quality TV? Cheap healthcare? Good food? Shopping malls? Rights to a fair trial? Free speech? Welfare system? A decent grade in some, but no top marks in any and struggling in a few.

I can think of a few dozen countries I'd sooner live in than the USA, but top of the list is my own. Most people will agree. So forget envy and start looking at US foreign policy, US gross commercialisation, and the 'Avenging God' belief of so many.
