I took this a few months ago at a nearby park.

It is a remnant of an 1850s bridge pier on the Manassas Gap Railroad, in Centreville, Virginia. Construction halted in 1857 due to financial reasons, but the bridge and already-laid track was utilized by the Confederacy during the 1860s.

Today these monstrous piers sit at either side of the Cub Run stream, just off of a cul-de-sac in a suburban neighborhood just like any other.

These, however, are not just like any other.

This vacant dwelling located in Chantilly, Virginia, was built in 1850 was home to an African-American freeman, who was tortured by Confederate soldiers and hanged from a noose on a tree that stood in the home's front yard.

Unionists later captured the Confederate soldiers responsible and took them to Point Lookout prison in St. Mary's County, Maryland.

Today this house lays abandoned on the side of State Highway 50, surrounded by woods, without any sort of historical marker to indicate the horrific history that took place here.
