Being a "diy-guy" myself, I like watching DIY shows on TV. However, I don't really like the Norwegian DIY shows. There was this Swedish one that was very good, but it has deteriorated lately. The British ones I've seen are not the same, they are more "game show" based it seems. So, are there any good American DIY shows out there, and could any of them be viewed online?
are you able to get the discovery channel home and leasure? they have the old diy shows like This old house, and New yanky workshop etc
* Please note this show is done by amercians, this could led to the possible one of 3 things 1. House been used as a iraq missle tracket. 2. House will fall down 3. House will look outstanding * Please read our terms and cons.
yes, we do suck at construction and thanks for blending yet another political bash into a topic about home improvement New Yankee Workshop (usually broadcast on PBS - Public Broadcasting System) is the best show to learn mainly about woodworking. Norm Abrams who hosts it used to be on "this old house" which is another show that is really good and still being made. There is also a variation of it called "ask this old house" which is fun to watch. There is an actual DIY network. I don't watch it much because the shows are pretty boring but you should check out their website, they don't broadcast the shows online per se but they do have a lot of tutorials http://diynet.com
Sigh.. Yea, no kidding.. I have to agree about Norm - this guy knows his stuff. The problem is that this dude has serious woodworking tools that more than likely no one will have at his disposal. DIY network is pretty good for projects but as Eddie states can be a touch boring at times. There's also Home & Garden TV & Discovery Home & Leisure which are cable networks that specialize in do-it-yourself stuff.
Discovery/TLC/digital Discovery channels: hrmm .... hometime - with dean johnson and his flavor of the month ... pretty good show, although becoming dated quickly ... then his last squeeze went off and made her own show - home savvy - basically hometime for women (with no dean) Men in Toolbelts - 2 flamers and power tools (kinda john waters meets tim allen - good for a laugh) bob villa's home again : where bob & bob went after being booted off pbs for taking a sears/craftsman contract (endorsment & design) -------------------------------------- PBS: like EtD said - this old house, and variations, New Yankee Workshop, all the shows that had the bob villa, norm abrahms, bob riley, or that creepy steve guy .. . note quite related - the guys from men in toolbelts got started on pbs - the precursor to thier "the furniture guys" series ... dark, home footage really - not as funny. ------------------------------------ i know there's more, but i just cant remember what. oh ya, and about norm, you gotta love a master carpenter with all of his fingers intact.
The problem with american DIY TV shows, well at least the ones we get over here, is that they all have a blindingly good workshop. Not everyone, especially in this country, can even dream of affording that kind of quailty equipment. "First you take your woden plank, and then you put it in your $200,000 digital lathe machine...". It just makes it impossible for people to reprodue the things that they are showing you how to make, or even find the techniques useful elsewhere. What ever happened to the good old fassioned hack-saw and file.
i know this mite be a bit off topic, but is there ANY shows in the uk that like show modding for pcs and stuff like that? Id find a programme like that interesting. Would be good if there was one!!
I know what you mean, I joke while watching "new yankee workshop" with my wife that norm is going to make a chair so he takes a hunk of oak tree trunk and drop it into his delta chair making machine "and as you can see, our chair has been expelled out the back of the chair maker and we need to sand and stain" The shows that feature actual home construction and improvement usually deal more with actual everyday tools.
I am lucky enough to have quite a well-equipped workshop. When I see a new cool tool on a DIY shop, I sometimes show it to my dad, who is more than willing to buy one I'll check out your tips, thanks. I might be able to get discovery home&leisure actually.
#1 rule of the workshop that. I'm surprised how many people watch New Yankee Workshop tbh... Although Norm's laser circular saw rocks.
