Have you seen the promos for the NEW Battlestar Galactica? It looks to me that the show will be a direct continuation of the original series from the late 70's - early 80's and even the ships will be modern models of the old ones I think this will be kind of like a new version of Babylon 5... February 24, 2003 Dear SCIFI.com and Battlestar Galactica fans, Here lies a slumbering giant, its name known to many, its voice remembered by but a few. For a brief moment, it strode the Earth, telling tall tales of things that never were, then stumbled over a rating point and fell into a deep sleep. I think there's life in that old giant. But I think that just poking him with a stick and expecting him to leap to his feet and resume his journey as if no time had passed would serve only to hasten his final death throes. He needs a makeover. Especially that '70s hair. So we've set out to bring the old boy back to life and give him a new look and a new outlook on life. And we're going to ask him to tell his stories again, from the beginning. Tell them again, but this time go deeper. See, we were young once and when the old guy spun his tales of Apollo and Starbuck, we were satisfied with clear-cut heroes and nakedly evil villains. But we're older now. We've eaten a lot of popcorn over the years. We're ready for a bigger meal. Make the story more complicated. Make the people less black and white. Challenge us, provoke us, grab us by the throat with those massive hands and dare us to invest ourselves in flawed characters who face ambiguous choices in an imperfect world. Dare us to root for heroes with all-too-human weaknesses. See if we'll still embrace them if they fall prey to their imperfections. Ask us to care for human beings instead of caricatures. "Our goal is nothing less than the reinvention of the science-fiction television series." With those words leading the way, I turned in the final draft of Battlestar Galactica. Bold words, perhaps. Arrogant even. But they accurately describe the ambition driving this project: We believe you can explore adult themes with adult characters and still tell a ripping good yarn. We believe that to portray human beings as flawed creations does not weaken them, it strengthens them. We believe that bringing realism to science fiction is neither contradictory nor a fool's errand. We believe that science fiction provides an opportunity to explore our own society, to provoke debate and to challenge our perceptions of ourselves and our fellow Man. We believe science fiction can still be relevant. We believe all these things and more. If you agree with us, then this is the show for you. If not, then thanks for coming, but the popcorn is in a different aisle. Over the course of the next year, this site will bring you news and updates on the Battlestar Galactica miniseries as it is shot and produced. Our aim is to provide you with unprecedented behind-the-scenes access to photos, storyboards, early story outlines, script pages, conceptual artwork, interviews, live Webcasts from the set, even preliminary cuts of scenes. You'll get to see things that are normally kept under tight lock and key — we're going to do this in an open, inclusive way. Let you see the process. See the mistakes and hopefully see the triumphs as well. Stick around, it's going to be a helluva ride. LINK TO SITE
what you mean american sci-fi fan's of a certain age im from the UK, 16 and love battlestar galactica
Well, slap me silly and call me Sally... I didn't know that the show was over there Do you all get the American SciFi channel? That's what it's going to be on.
Looks like this is going to I was a fan of the old series (but not the truely awful Galactica 80), Yet I have no problem with the 're-imagining' of this. Female Starbuck? no problem. Different types of Cylon? so what. (Hello No. Six! ) No Daggit's? Thank god... I'm hoping that this is popular enough to spawn a new weekly series. I'm a sucker for military sci-fi, and we haven't had a carrier based show since the demise of Space: Above and Beyond.
no it was on bbc2 daytime tv years ago used to watch it during the holidays cos i had nothing else to do
Agreed. I'm psyched about the mini-series and also hope that it will spawn a weekly show. Starbuck / Cylon / Daggit... Man the memories of childhood are flooding back! What was that stupid robots name that just beeped "bee dee bee dee beep"? I've almost completely forgotten about Space: Above and Beyond. What ever happened to it? I remember watching it one day and the next it was gone.
Beedely Beep? Sure you're not getting Buck Rogers and Galactica mixed up? Sound's like Twiki to me.... S:A&B was killed off by the networks - I assume because of falling viewing figures. And Just like Farscape, the final epsiode was a cliffhanger - the Chigs had just started negotiations for peace, But one of the Big Wigs at AeroTech(? Big corp in charge of earth's colonies and producer of most of Earth's muntions) Kills the Chig ambassador. A member of the squadron is killed, and the two female members are in deadly peril as they fall in a crippled ship toward the Chig homeworld. The other two - the main hero and the "tank" are left wondering what the hell's going on. And that was it.
:/ Not sure now. I'm 100% sure that the robot went "bee dee bee dee beep" in a deep tone. Guess my memory of that era is getting rough. Oh, this is going to drive me nuts all day now
"Bidi Bidi Bidi - What's up Buck?" That's definately from Buck Rogers, Twikee or something. He had Dr Theodopolis round his neck like a medallion.
YES! Phew, I feel better now. "The year is 1987 and NASA launches the last of America's deep space probes. In a freak mishap Ranger 3 and its pilot Captain William 'Buck' Rogers are blown out of their trajectory into an orbit which freezes his life support systems and returns Buck Rogers to Earth 500 years later." In 1987 they say that we were sending deep space probes?
Nasa had sent out several deep space probes out by then - Pioneer & The Voygers... I assume that Buck was on a mission to the outer planets of the Solar System in the universe the series was set in - not to Interstellar space.
Well, yea, I know that... I ment it in the same sense that the show says. We can't even get it togeather to build the stupid space station let alone do something constrictive with the moon.
Fans Battle TV Over Galactica It was the stuff of lunch boxes, kitschy bed sheets, Wonder Bread collector cards, and generations of geek dreams. This fall, it's all coming back. The 1978 sci-fi TV series Battlestar Galactica turns 25 in 2003, and a host of products will launch around the anniversary: DVD box sets of the original series and a feature film are due out in October, followed by a new prequel game for PlayStation 2 and Xbox in November. An interactive TV prototype is in development, as well, under the auspices of the American Film Institute. But by far the most controversial element of Galactica revivalism is a new four-hour miniseries starring Edward James Olmos and Mary McDonnell, airing Dec. 7 on the Sci Fi Channel. (A preview airs Aug. 8 during the Tremors season finale). The original 1970s series debuted on the heels of Star Wars, but lasted only one season. Despite adding up to only 24 hours of show time and a disastrous '80s remake, its fan base exploded when the original went into international syndication. Decades of reruns spawned fans diverse in age, geography and demographics -- but largely united in reaction to the forthcoming miniseries. They hate it. http://www.wired.com/news/games/0,2101,59906,00.html They haven't even watched the first episode, and already they're flamming it. I still think this will And the PS2 game looks pretty tasty too - hope they port to the PC for all us old Wing Commander fans...
"Had the miniseries been described as a spinoff instead of a continuation, fan reaction may have been more positive," Hatch said. "But bringing back any classic is always a delicate thing. Change too much and you lose fans. Don't change enough, and you lose relevance." That's the same friggin argument that every Trek fan I know uses when a new series comes out, yet the new series, although mostly dull at first, rocks within a few seasons. Hell, I think that's why I liked Deep Space 9 so much - it was new and inovating. I know that Galactica will only be a 4-hour mini-series, but it's better to have something fresh and inovating than old and "been done before". I'm with you GOO, I'm looking forward to the show.
deep space 9 rocked because the writers focused on getting past the silly makeup and rachet-noses to the underlying stories ... something most sci-fi lacks (tv and movie that is) ... now imagine someone makeing a mini-series/ movie/ game out of some of hienlien's kids books or even an adult-ish one like the lazarus long series. i know both of the ones they did so far bombed, but i kinda liked puppet masters, starship troopers was way too over-modernized though. and doogie howser playing a geek, who didnt see that coming?
