Hello folks, I am from overclock.net but I heard about this site from Custom Personal Computer Magazine.

I know a lot about LGA775, but when it comes to i5 or i7, I have no idea what is what. So, basically this is what I have at the moment:

So, could you suggest a CPU, motherboard and RAM for £700?

    Cheers guys :)

    Wow, that is nice!

What is the difference between the V1 and V2 P6T's?

The V2 of the P6T Deluxe doesn't have an SAS controller.
The V3 of the board (also called the P6TD, or something) doesn't have a floppy port.

They're all pretty much the same board.

Hmm, excellent. Also, what are your opinions on NF200? I will be getting a new GPU next year and i'm easy on whatever brand provides the best bang for buck (or pound sterling).

Is it worth investing a little extra in a board that'll do Crossfire and SLI?

most all the x58 boards will do xfire and sli anyway.
The P6T will do sli and x fire.

The nf200 chip (on boards such as the P6T6 Workstation, among others) seems to cause more problems that it solves. Still, from the sounds of it, you won't need 7 graphics cards. I'm assuming 2 will be ample for your needs. :p

I'm a P6T Deluxe V1 user, and I love it (even though I don't use the SAS controller or floppy port). Most of the X58 boards will happily do Crossfire and SLI.

Of course, if you already have a GPU budgeted out, or one you'll be carrying over from a previous build, that £200 will buy you a nice case and a bitching water-cooling loop... ;)

As Slizza says, almost all the 'boards do Xfire and SLI anyway, but for £700 you're not going to be needing either! I'm a V1 user, and I love it, although I don't use the SAS ports and only use the floppy port because it's there rather than because I have any pressing need to. The P6TD is a great motherboard.

Wait for the gfx card, definitely the 4870 will tide you over until Fermi or whatever else you choose.

Haha. Us V1 users don't care about fancy doo-hickeys. We're too cool for school! ;)

Right, you guys are useful. I like you guize :D

I used to have what one might refer to as a "bitching" watercooling loop. Spent a £550 on it including a Silverstone TJ07. It was so much hassle and provided so little benefit, I sold it all and got a TRUE and CM690. Lucky I lost nearly nothing when selling as prices had skyrocketed just after I purchased as Gordon Brown forgot to check the economy one day.

With that aside, I have constructed what I believe to be a fairly solid build. What do you people think to this:

This leaves me roughly £150 to buy an LGA1336 backplate for my TRUE Black and save for a new GPU.

What's you reckon guys? Sweet Christmas pudding or soggy egg nog?

Looks OK to me, though check the memory. What timings are you getting for that cash?

    That's a P55 motherboard, not X58.

On-topic, 1600MHz is perfectly fine for an i7. It's rated to be perfect for 4GHz operation (BCLK of 200, x8 memory divider), and from there, you can tighten timings, or if you can wrestle your i7 beyond 4GHz, it's good for it!

Served. :hehe: Triple-8-24 should be fine, and those are good prices. Gigabyte's boards are good too, might be worth reading BT's What Hardware guides and reviews to help you choose.

Not a bunch. While I've heard good things about the Gigabyte boards (as always), the PCI-E slots are still only dual-spaced. If you run Crossfire/SLI, they'll be right next to each other, and overheating can only follow.

I'm sure Custom PC didn't rate the DFI board too well, either.

    Processor nearly £20 cheaper

Asus P6TD is a couple of quid cheaper (Scan don't have the V2 Deluxe available)

RAM for £10 cheaper. The timings on the Corsair kits are CAS9, but if you wanted CAS8, Kingston is the same price.

I can only recommend the Asus P6T Deluxe.. mine's been nothing short of amazing for a year now. Cool, quiet, great overclocker. Supremely reliable.

Best motherboard I've ever had. It looks fantastic as well.

In fact.. every Asus board I've ever had has been great.

I get 3.7GHz on my P6T Del at stock voltage. Having said that, this is a C0 chip, and stock voltage is 1.2V...
