Thanks for that little tip, I never realised you could turn them off before. *does so, and explores some other settings while he's at it*

    me? or him?

i like both companies. actually i use linux most of the time (but i have windows installed on my home PC - i am lazy and haven't reformatted in over a year). but i would buy a mac in a second, if i had money, AND own an iPod :p . i'm merely stating something i read from somewhere. i can dig it all up if people are more interested.

but please, i resent being called a fanboy :grr:

I'd hazard a guess that JavaBoy that was being refered to, fod.

As always, I'm keeping keeping an eye on on this thread. Let's play nice lads. Everyone is entitled to their opinions, but lets articulate those reasons in a reasonable way.

Apples have some fantastic uses.... video editing... CAD.... folding etc, etc but they have limitations aswell i.e. largely exorbitant prices, 'limited' styling options, little game support etc. Can this thread stop being yet another windows flame..... again.....

Slide effects take longer on slower PCs.

    Very true.

Nope, but Windows Media Player 9 and 10 have a shop link that annoyingly can't be removed.
    About £200,--
It's about tracking departure and arrival times. You don't have to look at the plane move all day, of course.
It won't show without mouseover, unless you have something like the tClockX plug-in. I would want it to show all the time. I would want a mouseover or click to reveal a whole month calendar, in which I can click on the days and set events, todo's and reminders.
Tell their lawyer to call my lawyer. :p

Windows does a lot of good things by the grace of a multitude of programs and plug-ins out there. But it is far from ergonomical or easy to use for the non-geek. It's late, so I'll expand later. But suffice it to say only Windows requires you to press Start to actually turn off the PC...

Everybody ripped of Xerox Parc. But just like the bow and arrow were invented independently by a range of human civilisations on Earth all around the same time, some people will actually have the same ideas on the same subject without necessarily knowing about each other.

I've never noticed it! (but i have the advert in MSN... However, since its free, i accept that :) (then get messenger plus and have rid of it :p)
    Still quite expensive!
Ive never had any problems with windows, and the program I use i'd far from call geeky! However perhaps your thinking of some differant function.

Stop all this "who made what first" malarky, it doesnt matter!

Konfabulator was suppose to get bought out by Apple but they decided against it and just create their own widget system...

    * me pulls up taskbar to double height and sits there staring in astonishment... *

You know, and I remember seeing that once too? :duh:

Double height does own --especially on a 20" TFT. :D

ironically, the fact that my desktop doesn't look like a pond every time I drop a widget on it isn't really why I complain about windows...

And whoever said this wasn't a flame against windows: check the title.

I don't like microsoft products for the same reason I don't like mac products. They are closed source, very corporate, and do more to generate money than to generate good quality software. (some software may be good, but it still money oriented and could be better with the help of the open source community)

I still use Windows XP because it does everything I want it to. And no, I don't use konfabulator. Costs $25, and I'd rather have something free, like kapsules which uses anything from .net to php to write their kapsules in.

But that's besides the point. The point is, dashboard, like every other well thought out widget app out there, is cool. It looks nice, and once again apple has gone out of their way to make something cool even prettier.

I think the reason some of us of the geek nature get annoyed at stuff like this is we see big hype, publicity, and marketing for something that has already been done. And surprisingly the masses just eat it up, thinking, wow, look at what they came up with!

Kind of like microsoft. When was the last time microsoft came up with their own original software? When was the last time apple did? And most importantly, who cares?

The only thing I've seen microsoft and apple come up with is remakes of existing software with new standards that make it even more difficult to work with across different platforms and software packages. (My mp3's play on way more media players than most iTunes and WMA files will, so why mess with a good thing?)

    Closing thoughts:
    1. I dont' complain about windows because I already have shiny widgets that work great on my XP machine.
    2. Dashboard looks cool. If I had a mac, it would always be running and I'd probably leave the water effect on for a few weeks since as usual the GUI animations work very well on macs.

    bwaaahaaahahaaahahaa
    :hehe: :hehe:

Best quote from this whole thread right there tbh

On a more less-spammy note, OneSeventeen has summed it up very nicely, & personally I switch off all effects since I hate the resources they suck up.
I hardly ever use wallpapers even, something -H- always used to groan about when he used to visit
