What mispronunciations annoy you? 'nucular' (nuclear) really gets on my nerves... as does 'youmans' (humans) Post yours!
Racialist Some peeps have a really bad grasp on the english language. (Personally, i blame Ali G!!) Edit, Soz, i cant spell phonetically, but iam sure you know what i mean!!
the letter H... when people say "haitch" not "aitch" and the anythink thing annoyes the cack out of me...
Anythink isn't a mispronounciation. It's just a variation. I've never known anyone to use it all the time...
the classic american one - although i've been known to use it without knowing; "missle" instead of missile
You've all just posted things that REALLY get on my nerves too. I no longer feel so alone. The haitch and aitch thing winds me up sooo much. It all stems from my mate's Mum shouting at them when they said "aitch" and correcting it to "haitch". I even got the dictionary out and showed her it's "AITCH"... then went through the obligatory "not every letter has itself at the beginning of how you pronounce it, 'F' isn't pronounced 'Feff' is it?!?!?!" Grrrrr..... Actually I know many people who say "anyfink", "sumfink" and "nuffink" all the time as they think that's how it's spelt/said. Even if they're not stupid, it makes them sound fick (sic). I won't go into all the ones that wind me up or I'll be here all day. The guy I used to sit next to at work had an even more annoying habit though, he used to deliberately mis-pronounce things/names just to wind me up... and any words that can be said in different ways (e.g. "my-graine" and "mee-graine") he'd correct me on. He smells of wet dogs though, so I took no notice....
GIF: It's as in Giraffe, not as in Gibbon. People who say my nick any other way than 'K-Na' And just the following, although they're not strictly 'mispronunciations': Chomping at the bit. (Champing) Go over like a lead baloon. (Go down) Could care less. (Couldn't)
Um, but it is as in Gibbon... (GIF: Graphic Interchange Format) That is, last I knew... Unless I mis-understood what you ment...
Nope, having been a smartass ex-Compuserve employee, I made the point of checking with my colleagues in the US about it several years ago
I've just remembered more that make me angry. Saying bold when they actually mean bald. Saying B3ta "bee three tee ayy"... it's BETA for crying out loud! It rhymes with Peter!! The Harry Potter movies finally stopped a lot of my friends from irritating the hell out of me. Hermione is her-my-oh-knee and not her-mee-ohne. Snape is clearly meant to rhyme with cape.... but no, someone I knew insisted it had a silent e? I'm very fussy about stuff like this, I'm one of those evil people that thinks everyone should know how pronounce "Cholmondley" and "Featherstonehaugh"...
I think K-Na ment that he says Jif (using the ji sound of Giraffe) I prefer the gibbon version. I hat the the word that is a very northernism (mainly Hull) for the pass tense of treat. I used treated but the word used by many people round here (Hull) is Tr-et. Gets right on my mammary glands Meblin
ooh it annoys me when people say "baytah" rather than "beetah"(the right way ) and chumly... but can't remember the other one...
It's Fanshaw While we're on this subject, how do you pronounce "McAfee" as in the AV software? I've always said it like "mucaffee" pretty much how it's spelt, but people at work say "Mac-a-fee" in 3 solid syllables. Hmmm... that's not very clear, but maybe you get what I mean?
Yes! Omg! there's this guy in our year called Mat Baldwin, and people seem to produce it 'boldwin'!!!! I hate excessive smilies, but I really feel the need right now!
Yup Ma-Cafee here too. I also say Nike and Addidas the same. Why after soooo many years are people starting to say NikEEEEEE and Adeeeedus??? How do you pronounce the muscle in your mouth? I say Tung (like like tungsten filament lights) but my wife says Tong. I hink it's only people from east midlands (Nottingham to be exact) that pronounce it this way. One that I need to know for my taeching is SQL. Is it C-qual or S Q L? Meblin
