The one that REALLY gets me.... a-loo-min-um.. its alu-mini-um!!! also, i too back up MrDT's challenge, who can post a wav or MP3 of THEMSELFES pronouncing - Llanfairpwllwingyllgogeryllgwyndrobwylllanteseiliogogogoch. come on.... it could be a laugh!
Aluminum, without the second i, does feature in American English dictionaries. Dictionary.com describes the word aluminium as a "chiefly British" variation. And there is such a thing as racialism. It's not quite the same as racism.
Actually, I read recently that the 'official' way to pronounce it is now aloominum. I presume there's some top scientific body that decides these things...I couldn't believe that was actulaly now the official way. But it is. Na. One of my pet hates : not so much a pronounciation, but just as a phrase. Where you ask someone a question, and they say 'Me? Well I went...' Me? No, your invisible friend you phewl. Btw, isn't it supposed to actually be pronounced bayta, not beeta? As in the Greek letter? Oh, and one thing that I do that gets on my friends nerves...I pronounce router (as in network router) row-ta, instead of roo-ter.
I pronounce it 'row-ter' because in my head it seems funny to have a power tool connecting machines... Phat - ThemselVes. *n
fank-oo! \\runs away from rabid penski BTW, how does everyone pronounce Adobe? I pronounce it ah-dobe the ones which get on my nerves. arh-doh-beeh, ad-obie
Nope. It says it rhymes with Peter in the FAQ. I'm sad enough to check these things out before saying them out loud And yeah, I say ah-do-bee too. Sorry.
You'd have thought that after handling all that dangerous radiation in your protective haz suit you'd know by now!
I pronounce the letter Beeta and not Bayta (very American version in my opinion ) I also would go for roo-ter as it routes (as in what route shall I take to work today?) the info on the network A row-ta is the thing you use to cut groves in wood an the like (hand mill) Meblin
A few things I hate, even though they're not really mis-pronunciations, they're spelling-type things are: there/they're/their you're/your it's/its All commonly used wrong. Also, I try to use real sentences, even while typing. none of this talking in sentences that run together with no capitals or periods they just go one and then suddenly a new sentence starts and you can't really tell it just keeps going and all that nice stuff... Edit: I just read a post by someone that reminded me of another *looks at Kargin* It's "anyway" NOT "anyways*
Just thought of one of my biggest hates... The most worst. NO!!! It's not. It's the worst, or possibly the most bad. Similarly with 'the most best'. Or 'the most happiest'. No! It's 'the most happy' or 'the happiest'.
what about the bestest, the besterest, the besteresterer and the besteresterist used only when taking the piss i assure you
Suprisingly no one has yet mentioned my pet hate. pronouncing pronunciation pronounciation. I'll say that again:- pronouncing pro-NUN-ciation pro-NOUN-ciation. I'm never quite sure if the people who do are just taking the mick.
but almost everyone does it. Just because it's spelt differently doesn't mean they're wrong. They aren't taking the mick anyway.
I knew what the power tool router was before I know about the internet/networking component/device (can you tell I don't know much about networks by the fact I just refer to it as 'a device'), so it has become common for me to say 'row-ter' in relation to either object, upon which RTT, pronunciation whore, shouts 'its ROO-TER' not 'ROW-TER' you foool'! At least I'm not the only one who says that Also the West Midlands dialect, when its a really strong accent, leads to some ones that annoy me as well: Town becomes 'tow-unn' Going becomes 'Goo-in' Wolverhampton becomes 'Wulvramptunn' One thing that is annoying as well as 'computer' being pronounced as 'comp-u-da' with the ending like you'd say 'Bermuda', which one guy at school does a lot I have heard some annoying computer/techie ones, people saying 'Ath-a-lon' or 'Pentum' is quite common, also I know a guy who used to say PCI (Pee See Eye) as 'Pee-si' for some reason. Some more I have heard pronounced differently: Kyocera (printers) - 'Ky-oss-er-a' or 'Kyo-sarah'? Liteon (CD-RWS and the like) - 'Light-on' or 'Lit-eon'? Asus - 'Ay-sus' or 'Ass-us'? I use the former for all of those three..
