The anodisation process is explained here.

penski is correct, anodizing is a chemical process done to aluminum. You can find local metal finishing places that can do it for you pretty easily. One other option is there is spraypaint that simulates the anodized look. I just picked some up from my local Pep Boys auto parts place. The stuff I got is made by Plasticote and requires a can of the base coat and a can of the over coat.

The base coat is universal and you have three colors to choose from if I remember right, blue, black, and red.

yeah, the metal parts are put in a chemical bath and exposed to a chemical charge. Some brave folks have done this themselves but the process is pretty dangerous due to the materials involved and most people don't have the proper chemical disposal abilities to make it worth while or safe.

you could always try the anodizing effect paint from Duplicolor... but you'll need their primer (silver primer) to make it work... else it will just blue (look at his case and wonder why he put regular primer... arg) but the effect won't be as beautiful..

You basically submerge a lump of alu in a vat of sulphuric acid and pass a h00ge current thru it. In the surrounding liquid u put a thick metallic dye that gets "locked" into the metal surface as it forms an extended aluminium oxide layer.

Covering all alu is a layer of alu-oxide which is extensive and supportive, unlike iron oxide which flakes and breaks down (rust). Increasing this layer by anodising increases the metals protection and like said, you can trap a dye in it to colour the surface.

That's anodising in a nut shell iirc.

I've wrote that because I've use the duplicolor anodizing paint and put a regular primer... turned out regular blue... :grr:

by using that paint with the right primer, you can get something decent that will look cool... but that's not gonna be like the real thing ;)
