Sorry to bug ya but I got 2x40GB IBM Deskstars (I didnt know they sucked until after I bought em) Anyways, I also have a pretty crappy mobo that I gott off ebay... So the problem is one day I shut off the puter and its not finding the primary HHD master. So then I leave it for a bit and come back hours later and it works. Then I turn off puter and doesnt find again and hasnt for a while Would this be dead HDD or jsut ghetto mobo?
2:1 says it's the HDs. I had a 60GXP in another computer (60GXP being the "good" IBM drives) that died unexpectedly like that as well.
try it with only one drive at a time.. does it do the same thing? double check the drive's jumpers too.. ive seen two drives set to master work, but the bios takes years to figure out whats goin on.. -scoob8000
try just double checking the IDE cables for damage, faults or even make sure thay are plugged in properly.
I thing your hdd is going to die.i had the same problem with a quantum fireball hdd.its like its telling you to backup your data because its days are over!and you dont want to lose them, are you?(I lost about 25 Gb !!)
Well like I said everything was fine at first and then it gave me problems. It seems the one with my OS is giving me hell. I have tried changing the cables and whatnot. I threw a Maxtor in from my HP and somehow it seemed to work fine after a long time of driver changes But I will plug em into another puter and see whats up. I mainly just dont want to lose one of that has all my mp3s on it.
IBM Deskstars suck?! I was planning to buy one of those in a few days - the 60GB 180GXP model from here. What's so bad about them? What should I buy instead? Guess I'll have to create a new post for this one.
Gor.... They are made crappy. Anyways guys I find out it was the HDD. I hookde it up to my ghetto but pretty awesome HP and it SOMETIMES works. I was able to get some info then it froze. You guys think that reformatting it might help?
The recent IBM's are not that crappy at all. They have earned a reputation thanks to the 60GXP and the 75GXP. On the other hand, their replacement, the 120GXP, one of the first drives to incorporate 8mb Cache after the WD was one of the most reliable drives of its generation. If you don't believe me check the storage review drive reliability survey. The 180GXP seems to have great performance and very low noise. All round a good drive. 8-ball
I know that... We were on the topic of Deskstar tho. I also am a firm believer in IBM but these drives are not so zesty.
Well, I ended up buying the IBM Deskstar 60Gb 180gxp and it exploded as soon as I installed it! Boooooom! Naaah, just kidding. Actually 8-ball is quite correct about the noise level of this drive. Compared to my last maxtor drive (which is now my 2nd hd) the IBM comes out a mile above. I mean I can't hear it! When I access data from the Maxtor it is very noticeable the drive's running. But using the IBM - that's virtually silent. Ofcourse, the drive being so new I can't comment on general long-term quality, mechanic longevity. I've given it 3 partitions with a fair degree of ease (after coming to terms with fdisk and drive jumpers) and so far everything is running smoothly. So far, IBM have not me down!
