Hey again guys, you may or may not of seen my thread a few days ago regarding a build im planning and i thought i would ask for a little bit more advice if thats ok? my other thread is here...t=190964http://forums.bit-tech.net/showthread.php?t=190964 Basically i want my PC to be pretty much silent, so here goes.... you wont of seen this coming but....How do i make it really quiet? any ideas are appreciated x
Just buy a Fractal R2 as by the time you have bought new fans it probably going to near the same price but still an Antec 300 which is a long way off a Fractal R2 build quality wise.
thanks guys, i was looking at the R2 earlier and its such a beautiful case, but your point is correct it will be close to the same price. Not yet sorry, still waiting on my pay check i will keep you posted
In that case do not buy the Palit GTX260, there are rumours/issues around them at the moment re: quality. If I recall a previous post by others better qualified than me, the MSI is a good bet. The R2 is a much better case than the Antec 300 but costs more. You may need to add a fan or two to it to ensure great airflow but it is a very quiet case.
buy a fan controller and hook it up to your fans and control the speed of the fans then you can turn down the speed so then your pc is quiet here is a excerlent fan controler which has been given a good review else where http://www.quietpc.com/gb-en-gbp/products/caseaccessories/kaze-master-pro-525-bk
If you get the Fractal R2 (or R3 by the time you buy), it comes with a fan controller on a PCI slot plate.
Just added the R2 to my excel doc about all my new components that fan controller you said about is lush, my mate has one and its pretty sweet, one thing i worry about is the door closing on the r2 with the buttons/knobs?
That's right, you will most likely not be able to close the door on the R2 with the Kaze controller, that is why the controller supplied with the R2 is on the PCI slot cover. You can control more than one fan with the single controller (although I wouldn't control more than 3 max with that one) with one of these: http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Akasa-AK-FY320-3pin-Female-to-2-x-3pin-Male-(Fan)-Splitter-Cable.
Yup, you can see the knob in the picture below. Fractal state that the controller can handle 10w max. The case comes with two fans (1 front and 1 rear) but bit-tech found that it could do with 1 or 2 more when they reviewed it, depending on how hot the kit inside got.
Just a heads-up - the Xigmatek Utgard got an excellence badge, and was commended for sticking in some decent "high-end" stuff that actually worked (tool-less install, fan controller, cable routing holes), and you can nab one from Scan for £62. I got mine for £72 from my local computer store, and it was still a bargain then. That'll be infintely quieter than the 300, for not that many more pennies. I should know - mine's near-silent.
get out... GET OUT I am yet to understand the obsession with the utgard, it's not as good as the R2, and personally I don't see why you should by second best when the best is available, tbh though I guess it has the advantage of superior cooling but if you want that CM 690 2 ? I'd only go for the utgard if the equipment your using needs more cooling than the fractal can handle but tbh, stick in a few fans to the R2 and it's cooling is far from bad
There's more to low noise, than fans. Any case can have quiet fans put in it. A lot of cases will be relatively quiet when compared with the 300, or a HAF or whatever. The R2 has been designed to be "silent". The Utgard hasn't. It might be relatively quiet, but the R2 has sound deadening, and rubber mounts for HDDs. My 7/8yr old Antec Super Lanyboy is very quiet despite its age, because it has too 120mm fan spaces (which I've repopulated with AC and Sharkoon models) and rubber grommets on the HDD bays. My HDD bays are virtually identical to the R2 all these years later. Anybody not doing that is asking for noise to an extent. Depends how quiet you want it....
I actually think the Utguard is a fine case. I went into town the other week and had a look at one in the flesh (steel?) - courtesy of a shop on Tottenham Court Road. However, the thing that puts me off is that the front fan is part of the hard drive cage. To put another front fan in would require another hard drive cage of some sort. The thing that puts me off the R2 is the door, it would annoy me I think despite it being amazing value for money and a beautiful case. I have had a case with a door for nearly four years now and I don't want another one. I actually prefer the Cooler Master CM 690 II Advanced over the Utguard and the R2 but I am holding out for a Lian Li.
I have an Utgard & I just ordered a new fan. It would seem liek a ridiculous expense to get another hard drive cage just to put another fan up so I'm thinkingo fusing cable ties & the 5.25inch bays. Should work fine & I could even use some sort of strong elastic/rubber band if I want to decrease vibration. With a bit of inventiveness I don't think you can completely count out the putting in of another front fan.
You could just pull one out of an old case, too. I'm having a toss-up between the Utgard and my modded CM Elite 330 as to which will get the spare fan/HD bay setup I've got lying around. I've got 2 fans in the roof of the Utgard, though, so think it'll be the CM. Either way, the Utgard's a darn fine case for the money, faff-free to assemble, and, when I'm not running everything at full load, the fans can be turned to near-silence with good temps (though it goes without saying if you're overclocking and punishing a rig, you should stick the fans up during stress). I can't comment on the R2 because I don't have one.
