THE WHAMMY PEDAL. OF COURSE. How could it not be, and how on earth did I not think of that when I've been listening to Audioslave and the god of Whammy all night. Morello's Pedal board is still the one I want the most, its SO simple, but just so damn beastly.. Except he also has a MXR Phase 90, and I'd swap the delay out for my Carbon Copy because it is the sex. Seriously, if you've never tried the CC, do it. Its an utter beast. I've currently just got a Cry Baby Wah and the Carbon Copy.
While i would never buy it myself, i cannot deny its awesomeness and its tribute to a legend. :tuhmb:
Re the noisegate, stand further away from the amp and drop the volume by a couple of degrees. Most noise comes from too much on the line before the preamp, especially on high gain amps (like mine). Putting fx into the loop instead makes a big difference. I also used to think having a compressor or overdrive was necessary for better sustain and a heavier sound. Then I discovered having better pickups and using the EQ properly made a more positive difference and left me with less units to cable up & power.
Does anyone have some experience with the 18v mod that seems so common for EMG pickups? For reference, I'm going 81/85. I've seen a number of forums professing the benefits, and roughly the same saying it makes so little difference as to be pointless. Anyone here had any experience with the whole thing?
Eh. Tell you what, since I have been putting off the 18v mod for my ESP, give me a couple of days, and I'll stick another battery in there somewhere, and report back with my findings. Cool? I'm using an 81/60 combo, for future reference. I'll do a before and after audio take for you.
I've been listening to before/afters and while I can hear that there is a difference, I wouldn't be able to conclusively say "That's better than before". Then again, I suppose I'm prejudice towards the vast majority of the internet (I trust BT members more so than j-randoms on the net), so if you're willing
Well, I intended to do the mod anyway, perfect excuse. What I will do in the morning after we get the extra clips is set up my amp and mic it up with a couple of good mics, record a few clean and distorted riffs, do the mod, come back, record the same riffs but with 18v in place, give my personal verdict, and upload the Wave to Soundcloud.
18V mod gives a more "organic" sound to the EMG's makes em sound less like the "EMG sound" from what I've read I've only played the standard 9v EMGs so cant comment from experiance however I'll be interested as to the result and if its true about the sound change. also Sleepy where do you get them pedals? I've had a look round but cant seem to find anything on em :S
Which pedals, Whammys? They are fairly ubiquitous in bigger guitar shops, and cost about 200 quid. Fleabay should have 'em too. They are made by Digitech. Bright red. I love 'em, but I wish I had the money for one. I am torn between doing the temporary 18v mod and the permanent one. It seems that the temp one will require some extra routing and stuff to accommodate it, but the permanent one is WAY easier. I'll probably end up doing the permanent one, for ease of use.
Sorry for not being clear on pedals thing I was on about the GLX's can't find em anywhere which kind of sucks :/ As for temp vs perm. with temp isntead of soldering wires you could wind em around to start connect a battery (with way of keeping it attached) and having a test to see if you like before going to perm with solder etc.
Ah, GLX pedals. They've gone under a few different names I think. The heavy metal pedal I have (My first ever pedal, and I still use it.) has the name HM-100, and GLX is apparently a division of Galaxy Industries. Externally the pedals look like grey metal, and the wording and logo on the front is a different colour depending on the model. The Distortion was orange, iirc. I'll probably just do a permanent mod, to be honest, and undo it if I don't like it. I don't mind messing about with my guitar. Oooh, bear in mind, I also have an EMG Afterburner fitted to my guitar. I won't be using it during the demo, but it may affect the tone. :3 Edit: Found the pedal! That's the plain distortion, sort of like a DS-2. The Metal version, which I have, should be called a HM-100 or a HT-100. I had to basically tear the base off my HM-100 to find the name of the circuit board. Good pedals though. Built like tanks. Apparently. Also, that shop I linked? Local to me. The owner is a cousin of a good family friend. Really nice dude.
thanks alot when I googled it I got linked alot to Thonnman.de and their harley benyon (sp) pedals but wasn't too sure. as for the 18v mod if you dont like it you could just unsolder it or w/e but from what I've read it gives em a more SD Blackout kind of sound yet retains the EMG's punch. Also I've bookmarked that link for when I can afford to get it
I spent a while yesterday working out my ideal amp/pedal setup (I intend to blow all of my student loan on a second hand Rockerverb 50w and a bunch of pedals. It would go: JR tele - Wah - Orange and then the effects loop would be Carbon Copy - Small stone - Phase 90 - Boss NS2 - Whammy Pretty simple, but I doubt i'd never need another pedal for anything within reason. (And again, I simply can not under sell the Carbon Copy, its such a beast.
Dude. 18v mod. I have only two words: Do it. I am just about to record the audio comparison for you (I fitted it permanently, but I can bypass it at any time with a ghetto paperclip, yo.) but I have to say that it sounded like someone took my guitar, kicked it in the balls, shoved ginger somewhere far too personal then insulted its white-haired grandmother. That analogy brought to you by sleepygamer, running on empty. I will report back with my tone comparison.
Here you go, 18v demo. Super rough, and unfortunately the increase in sheer power doesn't come through on the microphones. It's louder, punchier, has a tighter mid-response, and it feels like you have more control over the notes. Heavy as hell.
