There are many strange weapons in this show. The information regarding special tanks begins about 10:00 and continues to about 18:00. Other weapons here are so strange that they may be worth viewing even if not discussing tanks in the rest of the show. This includes the "earthquake bomb."

Hobart's Funnies - were a number of unusually modified tanks operated during the Second World War by the 79th Armoured Division of the British Army or by specialists from the Royal Engineers.

They were designed in light of problems that more standard tanks experienced during the amphibious Dieppe Raid, so that the new models would be able to overcome the problems of the planned Invasion of Normandy. These tanks played a major part on the Commonwealth beaches during the landings. They were forerunners of the modern combat engineering vehicle and were named after their commander, Major General Percy Hobart.

79th Armoured Division (United Kingdom) - The 79th Armoured Division was a specialist armoured division of the British Army created during World War II. The division was created as part of the preparations for the Normandy invasion of 6 June 1944, D-Day. The division operated armoured vehicles modified for specialist roles, intended to assist with the landings on the beaches. The division remained in action during the North-west European Campaign, providing specialised support during assaults to the 21st Army Group and, occasionally, to American units.

WWII Greatest Raids - Hitler's Last Bridge SD $1.99 HD $2.99
This episode (of 6 total) is the only one with tanks in it. But, they played a significant part in this. This includes a squadron of heavy Pershing tanks just added at the end of the war. This show is low key on tank minutes.

    D-Day To Victory

This is an excellent series, but there are no immediately viewable videos that I've found yet. They are available on the AHC channel. This series primarily highlights Canadian and British involvement.

18 Oct. 2014 D - Day This episode focuses on the Canadians taking Juno beach.

The Battle for Caen S1, Ep2
25 Oct. 2014 The Battle for Caen - This one is about British and Canadian efforts to take the city.

1 Nov. 2014 Breakout from Normandy - This focuses on Canadian armor.

The Scheldt and Arnhem S1, Ep4
8 Nov. 2014 The Scheldt and Arnhem = The Scheldt was cleared by the Canadians after the British failure to take the bridge at Arnhem.

Battle of the Bulge S1, Ep5

The Suicide Raid: Canadians at Dieppe, 1942

Dieppe was a failure for the most part. However, the attack and its delay in coming gave the Allies needed information about conducting a direct assault on a heavily defended German held port. Be aware that several heavy bombardment cruisers were withdrawn from the actual attack ahead of time.

This reduction of force was also applied to the planned bombing raid. Because the Allies didn't want to breed French resentment of civilian casualties, the town of Dieppe was spared.

Since this is a movie and not a documentary I list this separately. It is a rare modern production by a good Japanese motion picture company.

It is said that history is written by the victors. This movie is not filmed by the victors. Although there were American tanks at Saipan, there are none in the movie. This is more about a Japanese view point than about tanks. This movie is realistically believable. <Action, Drama, Violence, History and some adult language, by Americans, in english.>

Great movie "The Best of Enemies" (1961) - In 1941 during the desert war in Abyssinia the Italian captain Blasi and the British major Richardson alternate between being bitter enemies or best friends depending on the circumstances. <British armor against Italians, War and Comedy w/ David Niven 6.9/10>

The video link for "The Black Battalion Holds the Line" was wrong. I'm sorry about that.

It has been edited to the correct link.

The Black Battalion Holds the Line (50:53)

One thing the Germans actually were fearful of was American artillery - infantry and armor alike.
Unsung heroes: the battalion of black soldiers who were surrounded, down to their last ten rounds, and yet who helped win the Battle of the Bulge.

Every episode is worth watching. I've seen all of them on AHC - a few times each - some more than a few. There is one or two that involve tanks or armed armour warfare briefly. These are a few seconds - they only show tanks momentarily.

This has low armor minutes, but it makes up for it with an incredible series of actions

Note: Since June 21st, 2016 when there were 10,772 views of this thread, there are now 12,106 views. This amounts to more than 1,300 new views in one month of time. This is about 45 views per day or one new view about every half hour - around the clock. This does not account for how many repeated viewings of the extensive information that is of interest to thousands of people.

If the depth and breadth of this topic is not interesting then I'm very confused at the amount of traffic this thread is receiving. This note is part of the limit of one new post - maximum - that I add to this thread in any given day.

Fury is the best modern (last few years) rendition of tanks and quasi tank warfare. With my familiarity with the subject on WWII tanks and actual tank warfare, I had problems with the over all plot and one entirely out of soldier's character remark by Brad Pitt.

    Fury has been mentioned and discussed in replies #19, #20, #24, #25, #31, #32, (#54) and (#55)

For most people, Fury was better for them than it was for me. Hollywood has the problem of not letting truth get in the way of a good story. My problem (with many Hollywood war movies) is that truth does get in the way of a "good story."

    Even Sahara, with Humphrey Bogart,
didn't have the proper number of tank crew members serving the M3 Lee tank (7) where it would have been more to the truth had it been an M3 Grant tank served by seven British crew members. The tank was undamaged so there was no story to explain the lack of tank crew members. There was also never an explanation of what an American served tank was doing in North Africa prior to the first and second battles of El Alamein.

On the other hand, there are some enjoyable and bloodless war movies, of which, I've seen quite a few. This is not a serious war movie, but it is one of my very favorites. It even has some American and German tanks. I like it better than Kelly's Heroes as far as comparing enjoyment level of the movie.

Note: The movie below would be better enjoyed if you first watched "Secret War - The Mafia Connection" to help understand the role of some Italian (Sicilian) American civilians who helped to win WW II. <free link>

This battle, the battle for Kohima, has been called the "Stalingrad of the East." It is a good show
and does eventually have a tank finally show up at the end.

Another great episode from "Narrow Escapes of World War II" has a large number of tanks involved. More than this found below.
