I'm a HUGE, I mean, mega huge Rush fan and am wondering if there are any others here on Bit. It all started for me back when Moving Pictures was released. I had been taking drum lessons for about a year and a half and I was blown away by the drumming in Tom Sawyer. I made it my mission to be able to play that song without struggling and after a few years, I was finally able to. Durring that time I was snatching up previous Rush albums and discovered their Hemispieres LP with La Villa Stangiato and Cygnus X-1 which made me realize that there was more to rock than the standard 4:4 or 2:4 time signatures. In my opinion, the best album ever. What's yours? Whoo! Just found out that they're on tour! Looks to be their 30th anniversary tour.. Anyone who has never seen these guys in concert and has even the slightest interest in progressive / fusion rock should really think about going. They put on an amazing show on their Vapor Trails tour 2 summers ago.
Yup I like Rush, Though haven't listened to them in ages as its all on cassette in the loft! Wow - reading this brings back so many memories: Geddy Lee and the "Spirit of Radio" blasting out in the 6th form common room! Or Train to Bankgok for someone's farewell in their gap year!! Ahhhhh - those were the days! It was all Rush, Led Zep and Yes for our little group! With others like Tangerine Dream coming up close seconds.... Stu
geddy lee is the reason i play bass. moving pictures. 8th grade. need i say more? i used to play guitar and some percussion, but now all i have is my 87 fender performer and a 92 peavey foundation 4 (homebrew fretless mod ) i still pop in chronicles and jam along from time to time.
Nope. Neil Pert was the reason my drumming style was what it was. Moving Pictures, 7th grade, 1.5years of drum lessons...
I've been meaning to check them out as recently i've been getting in to the progressive rock scene. iirc isn't one of the members now in a band called ASIA (It may have been Yes and not Rush)? I saw ASIA at a local festival type thing a few years back and the guitarist was incredible. I think i was like this the whole way through their set.

Heck ya! Going to try and get tickets to see them at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center! I've only seen them twice. On their Counterparts tour, I saw them from the nose-bleed seats in Albany, NY and at Darien Lake durring their Vapor Trails tour. Let me tell you, their Vapor Trail tour was the best show I've ever seen! They did 2 90-minute sets! Unbelievable... Just... Unbelievable...
If Toronto wasn't such a long drive, I would want to see them there. From what I understand, Rush has always put on their best show for the "home crowd". It's a good 5 hour drive for me to get to Toronto and that would make for a LOOOONG day! 5 hours up, 3 hour concert, 5 hours back... :\ Psst... Their drummer is Neil Peart...
I hope I catch them this time around! I was thinking of going when they were on the Vapor Trails tour at the same place, but didn't go. A friend of mine did though. Yeah, I like Rush. I don't listen to them constantly, but they make fantastic music. The members are extremely good musicians. Dad, I didn't know you were a drummer (or drummer previously). I think Neil Peart is jam-tastic. I've been drumming for almost four years now (not very dedicated at this point). I also play bass. Great musicians, they are.
Yea, started taking lessons when I was around 9 or 10, but hung up my sticks when I was about 25 as I was married, had a full time job, 2 kids and no time for drums anymore
Rush has pretty much their own type of music, it's VERY difficult to describe. The closest I've ever been able to come is a combination of progressive hard rock and fusion with a sprinkle of modren Jazz. Their early stuff (pre 2112) is very "Zeppelinesque", but they started to define their opwn sound with 2112. Believe me, it's music you CAN'T dance to as they throw in some real funky time signatures. Go to Amazon and you can listen to snipets from their albums. I suggest mostly anything from 2112, Hemispheres, Permanent Waves or Moving Pictures. Although Vapor Trails (their most recent) is pretty dang good. They are a Canadian "power trio" who have been around since 1972 and other than losing John Rusty after their debut album, it's been the same 3 musicians ever since - The music that they make out is unbelievable for just consisting of 3 members.
