lo, im using PCB's with 555 chips to control fan speed on my rheostat, but i need to know a code for the transistor that can provide enough power for most fans (12v, etc.) -- as the 555 can't handle it.... cheers, ..
That'll be a PWM circuit, I assume. I've seen commercial kits with a 556 & a TIP122 power darlington with a 1k base resistor which will drive anything up to 5A and is easy to find. Try Kitsrus for the full circuit pdf file (Kit 67). With typical fans most any fairly-high-gain NPN transistor would be fine, a 2N2222A will handle 800mA.
