This isn't in General because, well, mine's real. And I have a real reason to have it. And furthermore, I'm working on completing it. So I keep adding to it. I want to have lived when it's my turn to go. Everyone talks about what would you want to do, but I keep doing mine. Either I need to get better ideas, or I'm gonna go out in a blaze of glory doing one of these. Take your pick, both are fun. So what's on it? Let's see... To do I have... Meet Bindi (bonus points in Taiwan, still have to be cleared to fly) Take my son to meet his ancestors' people in south Florida Make CPU magazine Meet Nexxo (bonus points for donning coat and hood and inspecting the hives with him, he'll know what I mean) Give my wife the wedding she wanted Finish constructing our dream home (we've already started work on it) See my book finished and published Consume the ultimate cup of coffee (only one, makes me very ill now) Hear my little boy call me daddy (not supposed to talk, but he's trying) and other assorted, vaguer things. But, I have already... Performed Handel's Messiah (twice) Been a soloist in Handel's Messiah (with two people holding me up at the end) Had a cancer drug I developed tested (localized permanent argyria was decided would be almost impossible to avoid) Learned iwagumi Fronted a punk band Driven a car at 210 MPH (used to race, before my arm and vision got bad) Married my high school crush (12 years later, too!) Recorded 5 CDs, some as an instrumentalist, some as a vocalist Released a playable demo for a game I programmed myself Had my artwork used in print Published in fantasy, hard sci-fi, satire, theology, physics and how-to articles Made true friends, the kind that stick by you even when you're dying in front of them Read every known writing published by C. S. Lewis, J. R. R. Tolkien and H. P. Lovecraft, and almost finished with Poe Kept and raised multiple rare animals, including some said to be impossible (I've got live Oronectes here known from only one type locality, which happens to be in my hometown) ((I have to admit, sometimes that impossible is there for a reason.)) So what are you doing about your list? Don't wait till you're like me, sick and working with the foresight that only impending death brings. I could have done so much more. Don't put it off. You ever want a reason to carpe diem, here it is. We can all have the lives we read about others living and wish were our own. All of us. You have within you the ability to be the world's most interesting man (or woman, no discriminating here) but you have to reach out and take it. Look at your life. Now look at me. Now back at your life. Now back to me. You're not me, but you could be like me. if you stopped making excuses to yourself about why you can't do stuff, you could have a life like me. Look down, back up, where are you? You're out on the town with that girl you like. What's in your hand, back at me. I have it. It's an oyster with you on the cover of Maximum PC. Look again, it's a photo album of you meeting that celebrity you like. Anything is possible when you don't accept your limitations and live like you're dying. I'm on the internet. Go do it. Now.
It's great to hear how much you've progressed with yours, but other than scoring the winning goals in the FA Cup Final and the World Cup Final I've never had a list and don't expect to start one. Good luck with the rest of yours though.
This is the best thing I've read all week. Good luck to you on fulfilling your list, it's good to have something to strive for. Puts things into perspective, really. I won't detract from your post by putting up my own meagre offerings, but here's a quote from xkcd:
This thread may be one of the few things i've seen in the Serious section that isn't at risk of turning into a rant or rather demotivational, Admittedly; there's loadso f things I'd love to get out and do, but at Seventeen and broke; I've no luck with that at the second, soon, soon things may improve, so long as I work for it, but until then; My life is on hold. Kayin; I should hope that you go on for a good while longer. It's amazing to think that I've never quite met anyone whom I look up to in the same way I do you. I wish you good luck with the rest of your bucket list, and I hope it all turns out well in the end.
Seventeen and broke is what I was when I moved away to college. I still hold some of those memories most dear. Money isn't the biggest thing in life. Legally, we're dirt poor right now. But in what matters, I'm filthy stinking rich, and I'm sharing with anyone I can.
I'm humbled to find myself on the list (and not a little bit nervous --great expectations to live up to!). Let me know when you find yourself in the UK, and we can tick one item off.
I should have said, actually, that yesterday I spoke in person to my real Dad for the first time since I was something like 7 or 8 years old (I'm 31 now), which I guess was kinda on my unwritten bucket list. The next item on the unwritten list stems from that in that tomorrow I will try and have an open conversation with my Mum about it - could be fireworks...
er =] I've always wanted to go on one of those mexican cruises.. where the captain is all drunk and rams the boat strait into juarez.. then he smokes underdeck while the boat sinks well you got one offer to see nexxo.. that's nice of him- makes me think I might have been wrong about that guy.. but watch your back- you go into a dark room and see some noir with a chair turned the other way.. just make sure you hone the gaydar and if the beehive turns out to be a beastrix.. bindi probably shacked up with 5 asian chicks and he might be missing his white manners by now.. wouldn't mind checking out manila, philippines myself.. don't really think about things like that though.. sometimes I feel I'm healthy for a reason- like I'm here to be the pillar you know
Come on, thehippoz. Kayin started a good thread here, and there have been a number of good posts. Why did you feel the need to lower the bar?
Dude, I think that's on everyone's list! In keeping with the spirit of the thread, I've been contemplating my bucket list over the course of the day. I'm actually having difficulty coming up with much, but I figured I might as well share what I have, and provide some explanations for the items. The big two: 1. Keep showing my daughter new and fascinating things. We've built and launched rockets, watched monarchs and painted ladies go from eggs to butterflies, and I encourage her to "help" whenever I'm working on some kind of project. Which leads me to #2. 2. See my daughter grow to become an empowered, independent adult - more so than what I was able to achieve. If she is as curious and self-actualized as Kayin, Nexxo, and Spec, I'll call it a success. Other assorted things: 3. Visit Norway. I've been to a number of countries, but for some reason I'd really like to visit Norway. It may have something to do with my interest in Tolkien's work. 4. Learn a foreign language. I'm terrible with foreign languages, so I'd like to prove to myself that I can do it. I would love to learn Irish Gaelic, but would like to learn German. 5. Learn to play an instrument (preferences are: piano, violin, tin whistle - in that order). My grandfather studied at Juilliard, and one my biggest regrets in life was opting out of piano lessons. My siblings were required to learn; I was given the choice. Coincidentally, I'm the one who has an ear for music. 6. Make the cover of National Geographic. This is one I've had since I was a kid. When I decided to pursue photography as a career, my original goal to be a documentary photographer/photojournalist, and my long-term goal was the NatGeo cover. I got married instead, and the extended travel requirements for that kind of work wouldn't be fair for my wife. 7. Design a Space Shuttle mission patch. This one has been amended since the program ended. I now hope someday to design a Space Station mission patch. I've come close as one of my designs was chosen to be the new ISS Program logo, but the mission patch is my goal. I've accomplished some of my life's goals, so perhaps there's a chance to knock a few more off the list.
Too many things, but this is definitively a great thing. 1. Learn and do well in an instrument, I picked up piano once, that's about it. 2. Getting that one girl. Either I'm crazy or I really still...yeah.. that 3. Learn more languages than I already know. 4. Write something insightful enough that it changed the life of another. 5. Learn Archery 6. Find a girl that I can just simply spend time with. That would be nice. 7. Get much fitter, I'm halfway there. And it already feels great. 8. Drive a Formula 1 Car, namely any of the 80s Turbo Monsters. 9. Build my own car 10. Get into that university I want. Being 18, broke, and tied to family is sometimes annoying, but in the larger perspective. My life as it is is quite nice. Although not nearly as adventurous or as amazing as it should be. Gotta fix that soon.
1. Record / mix / master an album in a proper studio environment 2. Engineer a large live gig (10,000 people plus) 3. Spend an extended time travelling through the USA 4. Design / build a house 5. Climb an 8,000m peak 6. Grow old with the Wench. I really like the idea of being able to sit together as old people and reminisce on a life well lived.
I actually have a rather long list, but that is the first thing I ever put down on the list. See the Earth from orbit Others include: Get married and raise a family Create the next GE Designing and deploying a modular disaster relief system Contributing to the advancement of exoskeleton/prosthetic research Design, build, and deploy a hospital ship
I know a few people who've served on Hospital ships; a very worthwhile cause and certainly changed their lives completely.
I'll find Nexxo somewhere in Birmingham and send him over to you in a duffle bag... Speaking of things I want to do...I have too many to list..
It seems that every time I consider a list of life goals it's largely changed from the last time I considered it. It's for that reason that the number one item on my "bucket list" is to not turn down anything which seems interesting. If I do it then and there while it's still exciting I can add it to my list of "already have" while it still means something. Once you've got a memorable experience it doesn't matter whether you'd ever want to do it again, it's already there and not going away. Some items which always stick around on the list: -Learn to fly. Just to know how and be able to, maybe being a career pilot will make the list once I'm there. -Get married and have a son. Just being married would be great enough on its own, and having children equally so, but most importantly I would not feel as though my life was complete if I didn't have a son. The idea of carrying on the name resonates with me, he'll be the fourth. -Survive on my own. There are endless details to it about where to stay, for how long, what technology is allowed or who can be with me, but what's important isn't meeting any strict requirement, the only requirement is that I feel confident in saying that I am capable of surviving. The catch-22 is that once I've done something challenging I'll have gained experience and knowledge which makes my accomplishment no longer seem as important and find a need to do something even greater. Last summer I spent five days backpacking through the Olympic mountains and thought it was quite the undertaking. This summer I want to spend about the same amount of time, but follow a route that stays off maintained trails to put my orienteering and navigation skills to the test. Due to this ever evolving nature I can't say for sure just how far I'd like to get, but for the near future a month on the Pacific Crest Trail is looking like something to work towards.
You get around to this, I'll show up and photograph it for free for just the honor to meet you and your bride.
I love this thread. It shows that bit-tech, home to the religious and atheist alike, is populated by wonderful people.
