Taking advantage of the long weekend, I finished my dvd-burning pc - all well and good.

I Fitted the 120gb WD1200JB Hard drive, formatted it, installed WinXP, turned off, went for dinner.

After dinner, turn the pc back on..... it goes through the bios boot sequence but takes 3 minutes to detect the HD, then flashes up "Operating System not found"
The drive meanwhile has started to emit a high pitched whining noise.

Now I know this drive isnt supposed to make noises like that, as I have an identical one in my main pc - and its nearly silent.

After a quick CTRL-ALT-DEL, and waiting another 3 minutes for the bios to find the drive, it boots into windows fine - albiet still making the noise!
Try turning it off, and it gives the same error before.

I have a sneaky suspicion that I have a duff drive - it came factory-sealed so it may have left the factory faulty :sigh:

I have heard only good things about the WD special edition drives, and was wondering of anyone else had had one make weird noises?

One thing is for sure - its going back to the shop tomorrow!

I RMA'ed a whiny 80gb Maxtor. Noisy drive is one of the few reasons you're alowed to RMA it which is good because some people would tell you to live with it (since it worked fine otherwise). If all you have to do is reinstall windows on it the send it back. You should be glad it didn't go wrong later on with more data on it.

My two 40GB IBM GXP120s 'phart' now and again.

I've got no idea why, or what they're doing, but I've seen someone else on here whose drives did the same. Someone said they could be losing their tracking or something. They've not failed yet, but with my run of HDDs in the past (these are replacements numbers 7 and 8 (4 IBMs and 2 Samsungs)) I'm not holding much hope.

Nothing majorly important if they go ker-put. I've got most stuff backed up.

Personally I'd RMA it before it goes, so you can atleast save your data. However sometimes you do get the one off odd noise for some reason from them, I sometimes get them for an old Seagate drive I have.
