need a hand form anyone that has a big oxford dictionary (not the pocket or compact ones) that is reasonably up to date

i need a word-for-word definition of "internet" and "computer"

i know theres lots and lots of online dictionaries but its more for the reference than for the content.

anyone who helps gets an imaginary cookie

From the millenium edition of the collins english dictionary - Its a whopper!

    Computer:
1a A device, usually electronic, that processes data according to a set of instructions. The digital computer stores data in discrete units and performs arithmetical and logical operations at a very high speed. The analog computer has no memory and is slower than the digital computer but has continuous rather than discrete input. The hybtid computer combines some of the advantages of digital and analog computers.1b (as modifier) "computer technology" Related prefix: cyber- 2 a person who computes or calculates

    Internet:
The single worldwide computer network that interconnects other computer networks, on which end-user services, such as World Wide Web sites or data archives, are located, enabling data and other information to be exchanged. Also called "the net"

    :baby:

Hope it helps, i know its not Oxford .....

it wasnt only oxford that i was interested in, but that is the first one that popped into my mind, just didnt want definitions from a no-name generic type dictionary
after all "Woolworths extra VAL-U Dictionary defines the internet as..." doesnt sound good in a formal report

fivecheebs - the definition for the internet will work out great cheers, but the computer one seems a bit all over the place

h - that would be cool if i dont get another before then :thumb:

cpemma - didnt realise that

jazzle - haven't the faintest idea what my athens username and password is as i've not used it in years :/

computer: an electronic device for storing and analysing information fed into it, for calculating, or for controlling machinery automatically: Is the new information available on (the) computer yet? o The accounts are processed by computer. o a laptop/personal computer o a computer error o a computer programmer o computer science/software/graphics o computer-aided design.

    Internet isn't here.

    Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary 1995

    :)

One more thing I forgot to say, only 1 more edition came after mine, and I think it was like 2 or 3 years ago.

It sure would. Unfortunately, access to the full on-line Oxford English Dictionary resources costs a fairly hefty subscription.

AskOxford.com will give you a very basic definition from the Compact Oxford English Dictionary, but it might not be the quality you're looking for. It looks like the compact version used for this site is not the true compact version, but an abridged compact verison - it only contains 145,000 words compared to the true compact version's 500,000+ words.

From AskOxford.com and the Compact Oxford English Dictionary:

    computer
    • noun. An electronic device capable of storing and processing information in accordance with a predetermined set of instructions.

    Internet
    • noun. An international information network linking computers, accessible to the public via modem links.

Most libraries should have access to the full OED resources. I would try there. Hope this helps!

p.s. The free "word of the day" subscription is pretty cool! Every day I learn all sorts of new things about common words I only thought I knew.
